The honesty box is right next to the big sign at the entrance to the trail...

Employ a person to maintain it. Win win.

Aaaah!...never been there. So that's clear. A friendly approach to the OP was then all that was necessary.....unless he is somehow misrepresenting his encounter....but he seems reasonable and has no good reason to post here if he was genuinely intending to freeload and got caught.

The box is mounted to a low level brick column ...... it is not that easy to see (even though in plain sight), maybe painting the column and box a bright red (just a colour suggestion, pink, green, etc are all options) to be more of a visible entity.

If paying cash and you are afraid of being asked if you paid or not and not being able to produce proof thereof, take a #PAYING MY TRAIL ENTRY SELFIE whilst making a funny face or sticking your tongue out :P

Got to love bikehub threads. When someone raises (what I see as) a legitimate issue, some how it is always turned around and they can't be believed, they making it up, they at fault, etc etc.

Maxanon, just come ride in Jonkershoek or Grabouw. Far better vibes. We did all the single track in Grabouw on Saturday and never saw another rider the entire day.

Does each trail have a different color number board?

No. If you're a member, you get one number board for all trails.

BUT - the day entries are managed by the land owner, not the club, and as such different places have different systems.

Hoogekraal has an honesty box, as does Nitida.

Contermanskloof has a log book

Bloemendal has a day-number board

and so on. And if you're a day visitor, you have to pay separately for each trail you visit. So if you were, for example, hitting Hoogies and Conters, you'd have to pay at each trail head. So it could become quite an expensive exercise.

Person didn't pay. They're at fault. No contestation there, even from the OP. He admitted fault.

Trail warriors may have been over-zealous (I don't know, I wasn't there, and the OP may have blown it out of proportion) but they were "rude" and that shouldn't have happened.

Both parties at fault. One through ignorance of the rules, the others through conduct unbecoming of a club member.

Point being. You get dwisse everywhere.

Thanks. Makes sense.

Do you have to return the board after the ride or do you get issued with a new temp number at each visit. I suppose you will have to pay some sort of deposit if the number has to be returned after the ride.

Tygerberg members use one board that covers all trails in the clubs network.

Hillcrest is members only. Day permits not available.

numbers are one use only and really a disposable item

You only get a board at Bloemendal. Other trails just pay per honesty box. Contermans has a booklet with permits that you can tear out and take with you.

The first time I rode Hoogies I must admit I was a little lost about the how to pay process...

Sure some internet trawling would have fixed the problem but I wanna ride not trawl :-)

If you live in Cape Town joining Tygerberg is a no brainer. Hell I joined and I was only in Cape Town ~10 days a month.

Do it - you won't be sorry. Having access to multiple trails, green/linking corridors and member only sections is frikkin awesome.

Shot. Stand corrected then.

Hehe, that's part of the problem, system is so complicated not even us members understand it, how do we expect the poor newbies to get it right...

and at R650 per year you only have to ride once or twice a month to for it to make financial sense as well.
