To Razzworks, Brandon,  and everybody else who has participated in the discussion, thanks so much for all the information. I was in the wrong, clearly, and I apologise.

I didn't expect such an intense debate over the issue, but debate is always good.

My wife and I are now equipped with information, routes, and a healthy respect for the protocol of the sport.

I successfully converted the one bike to tubeless last night night thanks to Stan's tape, valves, and gel, and will do the other one this week in anticipation of a Meerendal or Conterman's ride this weekend.

Look forward to seeing you all on the dirt.

WOW what a bunch of bullies!!

The OP was more than reasonable with his posts and admssion about making mistakes here. The way he has been treated here is no different than the way he was treated by the bullies at the trail.

Tell you what, because of the way this has been handled I wont be riding there anytime soon, just now I have to deal with some sleevless vest wearing trail prefect with a houding, sounds gross...

Come ride here in Wellington. We are civilized mtb enthusiasts. Not many pricks on bikes  around here. Those you might find probably comes from that side to spoil it for the rest of us

I've been riding there for 6 years and have never been bullied by anyone, sleeveless (not sure what this has to do with anything) or otherwise, but then I am one of those nerdy okes who likes to abide by the rules. Amazing how rules (in general) are always great as long as the only apply to other people.

but yes, there are douche-bags in all walks of life and I find life so much more pleasant when ignoring them.

MTBeer's Third Law of Humanity - assume everyone is an idiot and you'll only be wrong 5% of the time.

Absolutely rules are rules! Doesnt mean we need to get into Wolverine mode the moment somebody makes a mistake and admits it!

If the OP blatantly broke the rules, then by all means he would be the dwis, but he has said he made a mistake. Takes a man to do that.

I've met a couple of these tygerberg guys and 90% of them need a dwis tag.

That's just me..

So then you won't be visiting us anytime soon? Such a pity...we're gonna miss you... :whistling:

I dunno, the OP sounds pretty level headed and undeterred by this incident as he has said he has now seen the great website and understands all the procedures, and will return and get a permit (more members and more money)

The only regulation is an "honesty box" and a few *** attiduded members make not the law, they make the entire club look like a bunch of boxes, which by the response above by gofastorgohome is certainly not the case.

I understand the issue with vast stretches of land and the challenges surrounding access control etc but it sounds like the club should send an email out to its members reminding them that not all people are ass***** trying to "jump the fence" some are just genuinely not sure on the processes.

Many people visit the Cape from out of town as well and this could happen to anyone, a little courtesy goes a long way.

The more people on the trails legally the better for everyone.

my 2c as an out of towner perhaps on the wrong side of "the law" one day in the future not wanting to get into an argument with one of these *** attituded types and rather have someone explain it nicely

*Attituded isn't a word, but I'm using it anyway

Having been a member of the club for the last three years, and seeing my fair share of rogue riding, I fail to see or understand your logic. The club has taken every initiative to display the trails on the map boards, and also included on those boards are the trail rules. Aside from that, it is just the ridiculously stupid or entirely blind that would miss the rather obtrusive honesty box RIGHT AT THE HEAD OF THE TRAIL. IT IS NOT HIDDEN SOMEWHERE. IT IS THE FIRST THING ANYONE SEE'S AT HOOGEKRAAL WHEN BEGINNING THE RIDE.

When you come down here next time, patch, grab a ride with Raydek & I. We're not bullies, I promise you. And yes, Raydek is a marshall.

:)

BTW - you'd be appalled at the level of abuse that gets thrown around as soon as you ask someone where their board is, or "excuse me, have you paid at the honesty box?" or any other questioning of their "right" to be on private land...

As for future ways to ensure monitoring of who has paid, AFAIK there are investigations into some sort of token allocation (via a vending machine or something) to cater for day-permits.

Must say, had my first experience at Welvanpas yesterday.

I can confirm that the peeps there are pretty mellow and helpful.

Not to mention the beautiful mountains.

I think what is so often forgotten in these arguments is that these trails are on private land and we are able to use them only as long as the farmers tolerate us. This is not Tokai or Table Mountain where there is some sort of public interest or historical use defence. If the farmers tell us all to f... off tomorrow we'd be sitting with our thumbs up our noughts or even worse we'd have to become roadies.

Personally, I'll grovel at the land owners feet to continue using these trails.

Ja but you can generally tell in the first three seconds what you are up against. A person with this gent's humility will show itself immediately and the situation from that point should be handled accordingly.

There is no excuse for being rude, from either side.
