Bicycle prices are freaking ridiculous. I paid less for my car shocks and tyres vs that on my bike. Its insane.

Yup. Brake pads for my CBR600.... R300 a set. For my Mountain Bike? R495 a set.

Cycle Lab is : R194,999,99

I can get a KTM 1290 Super Duke for R195,999,99

Where do bicycle manufacturers get off charging what they do??

How can this:

Dumb people are easily parted with their money.

If someone can show me how the Pinarello is more technically advanced than the KTM and worth more, Ill apologise.

K8 with ENVE wheels and cockpit is close to R250k

The issues is that at the top end you are spending a heck of a lot on the R&D.

You need to compare the cost of the high end bicycles with the cost of F1 / MotoGP bikes if you want to compare. Where a huge investment goes into making something that tiny bit better, because there really is not much room for improvement.

When Wiggins (I think) did a WR attempt, the chain "cost" USD10,000 or something stupid. But that's not the cost of the chain, that's the cost of taking a SRAM Red or equivalent chain and making it more efficient, and then producing 1 or 2 or 3.

No.

F1 cars and Moto GP bikes are one off custom items that are produced to be the very best at what they are.

No matter how high end a bike is it comes off of a production line. And all of the major components, especially if you're talking SRAM, Fox, Shimano are produced in huge batches in the East.

We're getting boned. Simple fact.

True, I was going to bring up super/hypercars which would come off of production lines too, but you're 100% right - especially when it comes to components. Pinarello/Colnago/Spez/whoever only make the frame (and seatpost), groupsets are either SRAM, Campy, or Shimano, and wheels are made by a handful of manufacturer's as well.

Things will sell for the price the market is prepared to pay, not necessarily what they're worth.

To add: Those very high end bikes are typically not paid for by the rider.

I believe the best comparison to understand this is golf.

We are basically the same market striving for something quantifiable, be it handicap or seeding. Both are done socially and you are always compared to your immediate circle. I don't play golf but I used to work at a golf club... some cliques always have to have the better golf rackets. Same as cycling.

Diminishing returns. At one point, I don't care how deep your pockets are, you won't hit the ball better or ride faster. That doesn't stop you from spending that extra money and the market knows that.

I tend to disagree with that. Most of the high end stuff is bought by amateurs in the 40-55 age group.

When Pro's retire and by for themselves they by steel frames and XT or Ultra level parts.

you guys mention High end Bikes, I still can not get myself to buy an Entry level DS @ R20k Plus(I am stingy)

20k doesn't even get you much these days. 30+ is really the benchmark and even then you don't get much.

I just got a quote for R34k for a Specialised Camber Comp with deore and SLX parts. Similar for a Giant Anthem X, also with nothing above SLX.

DS bikes are really expensive.

I am still of the opinion that it makes sense that if you have a top of the range lightweight carbon (or otherwise) race bike that it makes sense to have a 'hacker' alu training steed with perhaps more robust groupset/suspension that takes the most abuse ....

It does however mean not 'pronking' on your 'supermodel' looks, super weight weenie unobtanium pride of joy amongst the cool kids at the training rides?
