I don't think you can say stay away from this or that road. Wherever people are cycling, that's where thugs will try their luck. Unfortunately this is the reality of our new SA.

SKIET VREK. :cursing:  :cursing:  :cursing: :cursing:  :cursing:  :cursing:

FLAME SUIT ON.

GLAD THEY ARE OK, NEXT WE WILL BE ATTACKED ON THE BOTELRAY ROAD.

Sorry to say but this has started already with the latest incident on Kromme Rhee a while back.

It sounds like it was a well planned ambush as the Sportsworld group routinely passes there, like clockwork.

Agree with you Puncheur - What time was it? 10 cyclists 6h00 in the morning while still pitch dark? Definitely not opportunistic, those guys were waiting for them

Received word from my training buddy that our regular early morning training group (the Sportsworld group) was ambushed and attacked by 4 x knife wielding thugs this morning.

It happened at about 5h45 at the Phisantekraal Railway Bridge.

They were lucky enough to see the thugs in their cycling lights, and managed to fend them off with their bikes and the use of pepper spray. A passing truck also stopped to assist them.

Details are sketchy at present (all I know is what I said above) but I believe there were no injuries.

BEST OF ALL, IT WAS A GROUP OF TEN (10) CYCLISTS. No more safety in numbers.

I was riding with the group this morning and that is exactly how it went down.  Thankfully all of us are OK and lived to tell the tale.

Hope all the riders are fine.

I'm curious for more details on this. Does the pepper spray actually work, and by work I mean does it hold these thugs at bay so you can either leg it, or for the brave, deliver some quid pro quo? I recently bought a can and wonder if it is any use? I'm also too chicken to give it a try myself!

Proper pepper spray with a decent capsicum oil content will render an attacker useless. As in they will hit the deck and start chocking, vomiting, and often soil themselves as the brain thinks they are being asphyxiated.  I've seen the effects first hand in a training environment and in the the real world. If used properly and at close enough range, it is very potent stuff.

Ps. Don't try it on yourself ;)

Glad to hear you are OK!

Any chance you could perhaps give some more info on how and what happened, so that those of us riding through this area have some more knowledge on what to look out for should we be about to encounter the same crew please?

It happened as we were riding over the bridge crossing the railway line heading towards the Fruitsellers 4-way stop.  They were walking in the same direction but on the opposite side of the road. I don't think anyone suspected anything as there are often people walking to work in that area at that time of day.  The thugs simply ran across the road towards the group.  One of the riders was either knocked off his bike or fell as he swerved to avoid them.  There was a scuffle; I think one of the group used his bike as a weapon, then someone managed to pull out his pepper spray and sprayed the guy in his face.  While this was happening a truck arrived on the scene and I think the driver helped to chase them away.  They ran off across the bush towards the township.

Unfortunately as it was still dark I can't tell you if they were tall or short, thin or fat or even what clothes they were wearing.  The feeling among some of the more regular riders was that it was not opportunistic and they said they had spotted a group loitering in the area earlier in the week.

Thanks Brett! Clearer understanding of their MO now!

Again, stoked to hear that none of the cyclists were heavily injured!

It's more brazen than I thought they would be for sure!

How and where do I get some of this meanmothertrucker pepper spray? One of my friends was in the group and I missed it due to my bike only being ready this morning.

Either this or I need to start riding with a firearm.

Sick and tired of this to be honest.

I was told that Smith & Wesson Pepper spray is one of the best, so that's what I carry when I ride.
