Fire Extinguisher tyre pump?

I was wondering if there is any merit at all in converting a old Fire Extinguisher into a portable bicycle tyre pump?

Thought of charging/filling the cylinder from a compressor or garage pump.  Converting the existing mechanicals into a bicycle pump using bicycle floor pump hoses.

What would I need?

Gauge to check the filling pressure and one for pumping pressure?

Pumping control valve/lever?

How long would a 5kg cylinder last?

Is it practical?

Will it be like a bomb in the car?

Has anybody done this and am I looking for ***?

Thanks

There are various cylinders/vessels you can use - some more safe to use than others.

The best (IMO) option I have found is using a scuba diving cylinder and regulator.

YES they are expensive, but they work. Period. You can have these tested annually so that you know you are not transporting a bomb in the car.

Set the 1st stage pressure to suit your tyre pressure and off you go...

A "small" cylinder (Ali) will hold 180-200 bar safely, with +-2700lt of air available.

There is also a thread on how to build one using a coke bottle - please don't do this - they blow up and create sharp shards.

I saw this thread some time ago and it gave me the idea.  Scared to use plastic under pressure.

Will go to the local dive centre first to test the cylinder and proceed from there.

My coke bittle is still going strong. Nearly a year later. Maybe I should just throw the bottle away and get a new one. Cheap. Easy.

That being said, the idea of a fire extinguisher air reservoir us appealing,. since I have an old, unused empty on e in my garage.

And rumour has it that the guys over at Spez is going to bring a competitor for the airshot soon.

Consider using a paintball cylinder - I use one for my racecar - but using CO2 filled at the painball store (which is not great for mtb use due to sealant complications)

Also - you do get disposable CO2 welding cylinders you could use - much better pressure ratings - but the one I have has a sticker saying it's not refillable....

Co2 will damage the rubber.

Best is to get a refill(shrader) nozzle retro fitted to the tank. That way you get use the compressor at the garage and fill your tank.

I think I would just buy a pump that already has the second air cylinder in it - like the bontrager flash charger - just as soon as it is made by park tool...

The Bonty pump is nice, in ParkTool Blue it might cause me to have a tool porn accident.

A garden pressure sprayer can work as well...

I think one could use a car tire as well - pump to 3 bar and it will have enough volume - question is if you will get enough airflow out of the valve to seal an mtb tire.
