Recent experience with Shimano is not good. Things I needed to replace:

  • freehub - bought whole new hub and rebuilt the wheel
  • spokes - those flat ones for the road bike. 5 LBS later they found some in a back room
  • cassette - replaced with SRAM
  • chain - Also SRAM
  • crankset - now a Suntour.

Shimano is huge, they should continue making replacements for a long time to come. My 3x8 is becoming antiquated, yes, should probably upgrade that somewhere.

Apparently they have a big shipment waiting in Durban Harbour, some kind of customs hold-up (that's what the LBS told me).

Scott is a far superior bike...anthems are for people who cant afford decent bikes...it is the only reason i bought a marshmallow...which i am too scared to ride (hence the low mileage) because they crack up.

much like shimano...you cant mix components...otherwise they decline your warranty...due to being used outside of design norms...an excuse to get out of repaired thier crap design.

now to add salt to the wound...they dont sell spare parts...you have to replace the entire unit.

giant must come from the same shop as shimano.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Carry on smoking the good stuff. That's hilarious.

Oh - only reason they cracked (and only 2012-2014 versions affected) is because people buy the wrong size frame and jack up their seatposts too high, leaving not enough material in the seat tube and thereby subjecting the joint to out-of-spec stresses. That's been sorted now, btw.

As for Scott being a "superior product" because "they don't crack" - have a look at the replacement frequency of their rear triangles, due to snapping. Due to the bearings not being serviced and checked.

That's what i thought but it seems i stepped over the line...and upset a few people to a point that i this post has been reported to the bouncers...i was having some friday fun...eeeesih wont make that mistake again...my apologies if i have offended anyone...i will try keep it tidy on this forum from now on.

So let me clear things up and play nicely with the others :(

I dont hate shimano...the only reason i bought a SRAM cassette and chain was because the 4 different bike shops i went to didnt have a 11-28 cassette

i dont think scott is a superior bike...in fact scott...giant...same thing...just...different prices

i have no intention of selling my anthem...in fact i have had numerous offer of purchase for prices i could hardly refuse...because it is in mint condition...and i dont ride my anthem on the beachfront due to the rust implications.

i wont refer to my anthem on this forum as a marshmallow in future...if the bouncer can remove any threads were i have refered to it as a marshmallow feel free to remove it.

one point that i will stand by however is the fact that shimano will not honour a warrant even if the bike is 1 month old based on the fact that you might have upgraded your crank from a FSA to a SRAM.

enjoy the rest of your day.

You need a better LBS - Shimano have tons of 11-28 cassettes in stock. I'm guessing your LBS was too lazy of too pro SRAM to make the call.

And quite right on the mixed groupset thing - while specs may be the same no manufacturer will guarantee when pirate/foreign/other parts are used together with theirs. Especially not when you bought the parts second hand from someone who doesn't have proof of purchase.

Expecting Shimano to warranty your parts was beyond "reasonable man" stuff.

Eldron...i dont expect shimano to warranty "my bike parts" ...my second hand merida is already 2 years old...out of warranty...a year ago already...i was merely enquiring if anyone else had experienced the noise...it just escalated from there...even spent a few hour on google to see if it was a common problem...but it seems not...which hopefully is a good thing as it might be in my head [emoji6]

Just for record i do have the original proof of purchase for the bike and all the parts fitted at the time of purchase.

It " would" have become an interesting claim had the system failed within the 1 year warranty period...i would " assume" the bike shop would have become liable for claim had there been one...as they had fitted the "non standard" parts.

Makes you think...next time you buy a brand new bike and start upgrading...best you enquire about the warranty.

By the way...i went to 4 different bikes shop before i decided to take the SRAM parts...nobody had the parts required in shimano...i still cant find a pcd 130 x 42 t centre chain ring of any brand.

A fair statement but why all the brand hating if you didn't have any expectations?

One of my pet hates (oh the irony)  is people hating on brands when all they have is half truths and he said/she said crapola.

I'm not surprised you had to go to 4 bikes shops - no shop in their right mind would keep an 8 speed cassette in stock. But Shimano/Coolheat do. Interesting that they tie their cash up in keeping 10 year old parts but get lambasted when you're fed half truths by your LBS.

Ps: Coolheat have a Y16K98040 in stock. Not sure it's the right one but it is 130mm BCD and 42t and middle.... Also the Y1F342000 and a few others. Not sure what crank-set you have.

Like I said perhaps it's time to change your LBS and/or ask questions before jumping to conclusions and going all "social media" on brands.

Sounds like you also need a new bike shop. I'm not sure if LBS' just don't give a crap because there isn't tons of cash in selling old 8 speed stuff or they just couldn't take the time to make the call.

All the big importers like SRAM/Shimano/Rockshox/FOX etc have warehouses of stock and pricelists the length of several arms but for some reason the bike industry seems to be going the way of the car industry - no more repair/replace - it's all NEW NEW NEW.

That's not to say importers are perfect - most of them have been guilty of stock outs on essentials like chains, cassettes, brake pads, rotors etc at some point and/or repeatedly but I do get the feeling it's far easier for the LBS to play the "blame the importer" game than it is to spend some time solving the problem.

Disclaimer: I do find newer and smaller "owner operated shops" putting in the hard yards. Chain stores? Forget it.
