Who's fault is this now...

So in January I purchased a wheelset from a local online store.

The wheelset went into the (also new) fork via thru axle - no issues.

The front wheel came with QR adapters but they where not used.

Anyway, yesterday when I got home I heard a clunking sound coming from the front wheel area. Heard it only once so I put it down to nothing.

This afternoon while climbing up agravel road I heard it again. Decided to cut my ride short and went home.

I checked the wheel for tightness and it was not loose. Took the wheel out and checked the hub but that was fine as well.

Then I noticed the left and right side of the hub axle looked different. (I have not taken the wheel out since I purchased it) Sure enough the drive side part is smaller, almost like it is missing something. Go onto the internet and at first I could not even find the axle for this perticular wheel.

I found the 2007 manual for the wheelset but the axle is different. Then eventually I find a french 2014 manual.

According to the manual, the axle is indeed missing a piece.

How would you know a brand new wheelset that you never owned before is missing a part? Sure, in retrospect the two sides of the axle look different, but the wheelset is French...#justsaying. Everything felt fine in the beginning, no funny sounds, no instabillities.

So now I need to call the online store and find out what the heck...

My worry, although not visibly obvious, that there might be damage to the fork - guess I would only know one I get the missing axle part and fit it to the fork?

He found a french 2014 manual. That does not make the wheelset french, just the manual was in french. Every wheel set manual is printed in multiple languages

He specifically said the wheelset is French.

@OP: What wheels are these, and what is the missing part? Also, you asked earlier "if there is damage who is responsible", have you managed to check if there is damage?

Edit: Come to think of it, if the bike was working perfectly for 4 months without this part, is this part actually needed :P ?

Maybe just call the dealer, explain the situation and see what happens. You may be surprised and they sort it out. Then no need for this thread, and nobody can blaim anybody.

Stop with this logical nonsense!

Years ago I also bought a "new" set of track cycling wheels from a cool western cape cycle shop, but I name no names.

The wheelset arrived with stickers scratched on the hub, and obvious tyre lever marks on the rim. The front wheel also had a very slight buckle.

"New"...

I mentioned this to the shop and was told the wheels were new, but they were willing to send me a free track sprocket to make up for it.

I took the sprocket and left it there, wasn't lus for a fight.

Wrong side... Need to see a pic of the drive side endcap, not the non drive side.

Would also explain why no problem with braking, as the non drive side (disc side) would still have the correct spacing thus no misalignment on rotor. It would also "fit" as the thru axle would pull the fork lowers tight, so if you don't know you're missing a bit, and don't pay attention, you may not know you're doing anything wrong and it may only come to light like it did here, 4 months later.

Guys lees n bietjie from the top again. IT IS THE FRONT WHEEL. Or I think it is, the OP specifically mentioned the noise coming from the front and is concerned that there is now ware in the fork.

Not many bikes I know with a fork at the back.

Not to mention that the front also has a drive side and non drive side...

But of course it is different in Europe and USA where they have left hand drive and so the drive side is on the other side......... And we have already determined that this wheel is French ;-)

Can't believe nobody has blamed Apartheid or the ANC yet... what is the hub coming too!

PS: Love Mavic wheels (when they work!)

which is about as often as the ANC

really wish Dragon's would bring in the Giant wheels.
