So a $100 shoe will cost a pretty penny when finally landed and cleared. FML

I have found shoes, clothes and helmets often end up too expensive to make it worth your while after all the duty and vat. It has to be on a really good discount deal, preferably in a big enough order to get free shipping, or you might as well buy locally.

Anybody know if IDT's attract tax, or is it only VAT on top?

interesting question Bert. I've asked our resident import duties guru Lexx to advise us. Too lazy atm to go through the schedule meself ;)

Well I'm not finding specific reference to it on the schedule

Perhaps Lexx knows more (thanks for reminding me who it was, I knew someone posted the schedule a while back, but I couldn't for the life of me find the post)

Nope, it wont fall under 9605. That Tarrif heading is talking about other Physical activities like Golf, Gymnastics etc.

You have to look where and how and with what that  equipment it will work with if any. Then first we will look at what it is, a IDT For cycling, so it wont be used for Gymnastic etc. Now we know that Bicycles falls under 8712. So from there we look in the explanitory notes to this heading, and we will find that it will fall under 8714.99 (4). Which is parts and accessories  of Bicycles. So that doesn't attract any duties. so it will only be 14% + 10% ATV.

Sorry, what's the additional 10% for?

Edit: Found it.

The VAT rate in South Africa is currently 14%
To calculate VAT on imported goods, the ATV (added tax value) needs to be determined first.
This is done as follows:

[(Customs Value + 10% thereof) + (any non-rebated duties levied on the goods)] x 14%
= [ATV] x 14%
= VAT payable
  • The 10% mark-up on the customs value in this calculation is applicable when goods are imported from a country outside the Customs Union. Therefore, if goods have their origin in any of the BLNS countries (Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia or Swaziland), the 10% will not be added to the calculation.
  • When goods are exported to any of the BLNS countries, the same applies (no mark-up on the customs value to determine ATV).

So essentially you're paying 24% on purchase price?

Wait, no. You pay 14% on. Nope. I'm confused.

Let's say it costs R1000 (declared value). The VAT you pay would be (1000+10%)*14% = R154? Instead of R140 if it was VAT only?

If it was 24% you'd be paying R254, yes?

Its added Tax Value that we charge of the customs value. If you can import your cycling goods from a BLNS ( Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia and Swaziland) Country, then you wont pay that 10%.

I've edited my post several times since your reply. Just to check, the 10% is to increase the taxable value, which 14% is taken off then? It's not 14% and 10%?
