RIP.

But he question must be asked, why cycle on the pass?

I am not exactly sure on what part of the pass he was killed. Historically the guys and girls doing 4 passes would join the pass through Sir Lowreys Village at the first hairpin. With crime rampant in Sir Lowreys Village riders now use the N2. With the addition of average speed law enforcement the road felt much safer with my last few rides on the pass (safer than the coastal road with no shoulder). Clearly it is still just as dangerous as the coastal road. Just FYI, it is perfectly legal to cycle on the Pass as it is not a Freeway (road signs are green, not blue, per pic). With an 80km/h ave speed law enforcement, a dual carriage way both sides and a hard shoulder all the way this should be one of the safer passes to ride in SA. post-5386-1463991427,7344.jpg

Then it isn't as relevant and as impactful to road safety...

RIP Allesandro.

There is a time to discuss the relevance of the incident. Its a matter of timing

 and this is the time

Why do you think Seatbelt and anti drinking campaigns use shock pictures to try and get people to be aware of the consequences...

This death is a tragic reminder that we must be aware, vigilant and practice safe cycling.. maybe we should maybe have mirrors on our bikes if we ride in busy traffic areas... ?

Rest in peace!

The family trying to make sense of this are deep in my thoughts!

(Those trying to argue the merits of why he was riding where he was, please open a separate thread! We all know family members will likely see this post at some point. Please think of them!)

Hate to  break it to you (edit: sorry, not to you Sven but to the other naysayers who are shouting at us) but I worked as a journalist for 8 years...its called a "news cycle". People will be tired of discussing this. The time to discuss safety is NOW. Sympathies to his family, it is them who are now suffering thanks to his error of judgement. I do not have sympathy for cyclists who cycle on the national roads!

You just highlite one of the biggest problems on SA roads.  The absolute ignorance of South African road users.  People with drivers licences who do not know the difference between a highway and a national road.  This topic has been discussed so many times.  Use the search option to learn more.

It was not illegal for the cyclist to cycle there.  The question was it safe.  I have not cycled that part of the N2 so have no experience.  But from the times that I have driven there by car I am sure it would be as any other road barring peak traffic times.
