Back onto the subject of cry baby Aru, I can say with confidence that when you see him crying like that on the bike, he is really crying for his momma. Literally, that’s exactly what he’s doing.

I know this because there's a well know word for Italian men: Mammoni.

It means 'mommas boy'.

From birth they are doted on like little princes. Their every need is taken care of. Many adult married men not only have never changed a nappy in their lives, but will also have no idea how to boil an egg. They've never had to cook a meal in their lives, never had to wash or iron their own clothes, never helped clean the dinner table or take out the trash.

A recent survey found that 1 in 3 Italian men sees his mother every day. 7 out of 10 unmarried men over the age of 35 still live with their parents. And far from being objects of derision, these men are celebrated and respected. It’s an integral part of Italian culture. The women do everything while the men have everything done for them.

The result is that they never grow up and are stuck in adolescence.

This, combined with the fact that Italian culture is accepting of over-the-top displays of public emotion, helps to explain the spoilt-brat behaviour of your typical Italian pro cyclist (Aru, Nibali, etc.). They've always behaved like this - all they have to do is start wailing and mommy will come running to fix things for them.

These two articles are worth reading - they give an excellent description of your typical Italian male:

The (un)making of the Italian man.

Italian men and their mothers.

Mama! Mama! I want my mama!

Why are we giving Aru sh!t? Tony Martin is the real whiney baby here. What a toss. I liked the guy previously when I thought he was tough as nails. But apparently he is made of some soft slimey gelatinous substance.

This as such a generalisation.

My dad left his mamma to come to SA... added he missed his mamma so much even after she had died and until the day he died... but guilty as sin cause I dote over my boys... I am definitely raising at least 1 mammas boy. . The other one not so much.

Ja that tantrum about the ITT yesterday was not cool at all. Perhaps Tony is feeling feeling the pressure because he hasn't won many TT lately. . He is starting to moan as much as Fabulous.

Its really bizarre. Its not like he just rocked up and they told him "guess what, its uphill today".

He has probably known his race schedule since late 2015. Target races you can win rather than complaining about a hill climb challenge at a race you entered. And, and, I promise 95% of viewers loved watching the prologue yesterday in place of a boring 8km pancake flat TT.

Tantrum? Please share?

Man I hate it when I miss the saucy bits. (There was a cracker of a MotoGP race happening at the same time on SS, so I was hopping between the two channels :( )
