Sparkling mineral water PH? What are they feeding us?

i drink what i have always drunk and eat what I have always ate. People pay far too much attention to diet thinking that diet is the most important thing in a healthy lifestyle...wheras nothing surpasses activity and sleep.

I have met people taking bottled water to the drakensberg!

That river water & spring water is some of the best I have ever tasted. Like the stuff in the Cedarberg as well...

Bottled water is 99.9 percent H20, so I think that is the key to this water story. Despite it's pH, bottled water is mostly water. The pH is a property of trace amounts of various substances which are harmless at the levels measured.

One of the greatest health advances of the 20 th century is access to clean water.

It is good to think about how clean our water is, but if we talk to the experts, tap water and bottled water in this country is basically the same thing. In most countries this is not the case.

Where I go in the berg the local water is full of Ecoli bacteria from people upstream using the river as a toilet. Drink the water if you want to lose a few kilos very rapidly.

in the Ezemvelo areas? - that water is as about as pure as it gets. Even Mnweni area  - once you are through the villages the water is pure

I think in the high up hiking areas there are no settlements and it is basically spring water. Once in the caravan parks there are quite a few settlements upstream, so not safe unless you are a local.

Chris Kesser has written these two very good articles on the subject as well:

Thanks for posting this. However, I find myself thinking that it is just like the articles the "bored housewives" you refer to read. Uses just as much broad brush statements said with seeming authority but easily refutable. I does add to the debate though.

Interesting follow-on to this. Take Daryl Impey. He apparently thinks that taking bicarb in capsules will reduce the "lactic acid" build-up in his muscles. What this article postulates is that his system will just produce a counteracting amount of acid to neutralise the alkaline in the bicarb, thereby rendering the act of taking it useless. Maybe it is just the placebo effect or maybe it works?

What do you think?

Doctor Ben Goldacre.

His badscience.net website is excellent and he's a nice bloke.

He hates quackery and is an avid activist for good quality medicine and evidence based scientific practices

The site has some excellent reading; British based, but the information is applicable everywhere.

So many great articles going back thirteen years or more.

Many topics pertinent to the discussion here.

this thread reminds me of one of my favourite jokes -

Did you hear about the guy who forgot to take his homeopathic meds? He died of an overdose...

Bicarb is a buffer, so although slightly alkaline, it can resist the effects of acid by dissociating more as it reacts with acid. That is why it is used in swimming pools to stablise pH. There is some strange logic in what Daryl is doing, however, I tried it and didn't see any gains. I have read that some other pros use bicarb for time trials. The bicarb would probably all react with stomach acid making you burp, which is what I found. If you take too much you get stomach cramps from the gas.

I read the two articles, basically says the Alkali diet is healthy, but the pseudo science behind it is a bunch of bull.

then I should have been dead a long time ago...

Me too. I just kept quite.

Nooit bud. If your HR is an issue, use the normal quack method : clearly your blood is in the way. Lance with leaches, and dilute with alcohol and call me in the morning.

Did the thinning thing and got a headache too. Craft Beer!!!

Mr Kresser HAS to take the stance he does because he needs people to buy into his Paleo diet thing. It would frankly be commercial suicide for him not to support his own product assertions. Kind of dilutes his credibility as he is not talking from an objective perspective but from a commercial one, no matter how scientific he tries to sound.

I'm sure the Vegans can also come up with plenty of scientific stuff to back what they do too. (Especially the ones who are commercially connected to Veganism.)

However, as I said, it adds to the debate.

The best water you will ever taste is straight from a glacier, had the pleasure of running around on Perito Moreno.  Having a good whiskey using the glacier ice with family...priceless!
