What is the biggest bike and/or bike gear buy mistake you have made?

jcmeyerss, on the bibs... we'd be happy to refund you on them if you return them to one of our factory stores. Sorry to hear you a bad experience

If it was long ago? Which I believe it quite possibly was (we don't do cheap as a rule of thumb anymore), I would also be happy to offer you a new experience on our bibs when you are next in the market - any of your choice at a 35% discount.

I'd personally recommend our new Platinum bib

Just bomb me a pm if I can help

Cheers

Andrew

Wow Andrew

yes it was a very long time ago (7/8 years ago). Maybe I should state that. In fact I will edit my post.

Thank you very very much for your kind offer. you did not have to do that.

Those Bibs are long gone, donated a whole bunch of kit and cleats to the Northern Farm kids.

I will definitely give anatomic a try next time i buy bibs. thanks.

Sorry Andrew, but my worst purchase was Anatomic bibs beginning last year. It seems that the majority of Anatomic bibs are designed so that it looks like you have made a proper number2 oops (sh@ in it) The chamois sags a lot at the back, it is loose fitting. This ends in a lot of chaving where you really don't want to...

The only identification on the bib is "tycoon knit" and "ergonomic". It has an orange chamois. I had to buy it as my club decided on using branded Anatomic bibs.

And for the record - I have a proper boesman gat. And I do pull the bib up as much it allows you to without suffering a cameltoe (and I am a guy...)

Disclaimer.... not looking for any freebies. Just want to know if the design is still the same, or has it changed.

I also had terrible results long ago with Anatomic. But I bought their new elite bib shorts at the Factory shop here in CT as I heard they had improved dramatically and I have been very pleasantly surprised. Was about R1000 but good value for money.

I have a list

  • My first set of maxxis Crossmarks. (didnt know they had to be LUST to run tubeless)
  • Avid Juicy Ultimate (need I say more)
  • Carbon Silverback MTB for the wife. Honestly think she has done 40km on it in 3 years.
  • All the riding kit for the wife

* You don't need the Lust ones to ride tubeless.

* Rode with Juicy Ultimates for years, loved them. They are actually still on my 26er.

* Also built carbon rocket ship 29er for wife after she cycled for years. Not soon afterwards, quit cycling cold turkey. Got a brand new road bike as well, rode it maybe 3 times. Been hanging on the wall since.

* Drawers full of riding kit for wife. Tied up in a few pick 'n pay packets and in storage.

Seems to me there is always some guy that wants to tell you that what you consider rubbish is actually not and that you are making a mistake by saying they were bad purchases .

What is it - do you feel threatened that someone else considers your choices to be their worst choices...?

I want my first bike back - it was a Steel Merckx frame. I wish I had the vision to have kept it now.

I regret selling things more actually:

Sold my tandem when i got divorced in 2006. But it was very unusual- it had discs on it - which was a first. To do that I imported White Industries single billet titanium hubs. If only Mr Bontekoning (who bought it) knew - those hubs are worth about R12k a set now - sold the whole bike (Cannondale) for R 16k. And then guess what - bought another tandem a year ago.

Sold my Merlin Cielo roadbike frame - beautiful piece of work which I purchased when i was racing a lot of road and had done some big deals and wanted to reward myself. Truly a work of art. Titanium/carbon lugged frame with campy record 10 Speed. Sold it when I got in to MTB and thought my road riding days were over.

Sold my Campag Nucleon wheelset when i went to Mavic Ksyriums. To this day the campy wheels were the strongest and most trouble free wheels i have ever ridden, and I am not a small guy.

Fortunately i never sold my Colnago C40 which I still ride very regularly. Best purchase I ever made..

My last mountain bike. Waste of money. Never ride it. Bought my first MTB in 1992 and rode like a crazy person all over the place. Toured and commuted and raced. Stage races, one day events, 24 hour team events and 24 hour solo. Week long tours and even a 6 month tour.

Sick of it. Hate bike parks. Don't like the two man team format for stage races. Get annoyed with the constant grazes and bruises from silly crashes caused by a lack of skill and concentration. Much prefer the catastrophic hospitalisation I have every two years on a road bike.

Perhaps one day I will get back to it meantime it was a badly spent 30K

apart from being heavy, never missed a beat (ok some say it belongs in the ugly bikes thread)

Lekker, the offer stays open   And zero offence taken, we were the ones at fault...

That's one of the newer versions... I'm talking about 8yrs back. Had a mate who went through three in one year... all broke in the same spot. Omnico replaced each and every one to their credit, but they did eventually convert him across to a dual Zaskar.

Carbon Roval SL Trail wheels for my 26er. Rear hub is the 142+ hub and doesn't fit my frame and now I'm stuck with the wheels. And way to broke to buy a frame that can accommodate the wheels.
