Just be careful. A mate of mine bought a Aeon on here and after comparing it to the ones in the shop later it was a fake. Just be vigilant. I have never had issues on the hub, its just this one I know of.

Hi Guys

Just wondering if there is value in buying a second hand helmet.

More about previously used ones (wear and tear)

Cheers

That's just gross...

It is used to protect your brain. Not such a good thing to skimp on.

If you are happy about sharing someone else's sweat and greasy hair, then go for it.

Bear in mind that most manufacturers recommend replacing a helmet every three years. Apparently the sweat breaks down the material and it's integrity is compromised.

Personally, I think that is just hocus, somewhat like the sell by date on food. They are just trying to sell you a helmet every 3 years.

only buy quality model helmets second hand

go see a real one and check its price at a bike shop so you are an informed buyer

if its a bit dirty wash it with neutral soap and cold water

with some models you can replace the foam inserts (if you can get the new ones locally)

just make sure it isn't dinged or cracked

the 3 year rule (unlike with food ) I also believe is a marketing ploy

its a good way to get a deal (but if its too cheap then ask yourself why :)

Guess it depends on age and Ware and tear. I think that parts of the helmut can become brittle and compromise the safety of the helmut.

Personally a helmut is something i would buy new as i dont lime the idea of it being sweated in from someone else.

I should imagine here in SA the sun plays a major role in degrading plastics? I have had mine for about 3 years, average rides of 2hrs+,  4 or 5 times a week. That's around 1500 odd hours in the sun at least?

2 hours a day, 5 times a week ? I would imagine that many of us put in our weekly rides in the dark and its only on the weekends that we are exposed to the elements for a few hours.

I bought a used Kask infinity last week for almost 1/5th the price of new. New price just over R5k.

As good as new imo. I just gave it a good wash and soaked it in some Dettol. Shouldn't have anything to worry about...
