PPA One Tonner 2016

The extra distance compared to the normal funrides is brutal if you get your tactics wrong or try to wing it when you are not quite fit enough - which makes the One Tonner unique

Had an embarrassing last 20km when it felt like everybody and their dog were passing me plodding along on my own, completely blown.

Will redeem myself at the Stellenbosh tour

I had 40-45% of my watt outage available for the last 40

A dad mentoring his 12 year old son passed me on Kromme Rhee rd ????

I managed to over hear someone saying that Savage was pulling too hard from Pniel and that we must not have done the one tonner before. The Cecil Nurse guys were also going strong in the group until about 80km, then never saw them again.

Do anyone know who they are?

yeah one of the hardest PPa races,

those guys were monsters especially in the first half of the race.

kudos to the rest for working together to reel them in after botmans

manage roll in at 4:28

Nice to meet you Skubarra. That little group worked together very nice.

You legs will tell you up Bothmas' what the next 70 kms is gonna be like

Breezer were you in the little group of about 7 that rode together between Wellington and Bohtmaskop?

Nice to see I wasn't the only one suffering on the day, albeit self inflicted. I was the dude on the Bianchi in Oryx kit

Those two HC riders are ride captains for the Rouleur - masters at long distance riding and can definitely put on the hurt.

Somewhat glad and disappointed I didn't suck their wheel, but it was a (3 man) DC team ride for me. Had a fun breakaway with just under 3Km to go  :whistling:

I remember you.

Got you along the way, didn't start with us

By my standards, had a brilliant race.

Due to the fact that my last PPA race was the Argus this year, my seeding fell through the floor, and I got dropped to J, which is where I duly started.

We had the Alan Gray guys, EOH and Cedar Cycling in our group, and the start was fast (luckily I cycled in from Caltex on Bottelary corner, as a warmup)

Alan Gray disappeared up Hels, never to be seen again.  :whistling:

EOH tried their best "SkyBorgs" impression up Hels to keep the pace high, and everybody behind them, but a few of us managed to sneak past them and bridge to the next splinter group up the road.

Going down past Pniel, EOH caught up again, with the whole J group in tow, and I duly got in the bus. A nice pace was maintained, with Cedar and EOH (accompanied by a lot of shouted team orders) keeping the pace steady.

EOH stopped at the waterstation at the foot of Botmans, and I used the opportunity to refill my bottles. Got going before EOH did, and never saw them again.

Going down the other side to Malmesbury, a few of us got a nice paceline going, and kept the tempo nice and high. Caught up with the J group of the 109km race, and swept past them with impunity  , with them latching onto our little paceline. Just before the Silo's I decided that it was enough working at the front, and slowed down enough to sit in the front third of the group. Luckily they kept the pace up, and we had a good, fast ride to the end.

The weatther was perfect, and the wind played along nicely, so much so that some sections of the R302 was done at an avg of between 45-50km/h.

Ended up with a respectable (for me at least) 5:28:30, which is a huge improvement on last year.

Very few incidents on the way, with guys behaving very well. Did not observe one fall the whole 170km. Well done guys.

Rode at the back of the 109km race (U-W) and saw two guys wipe out on Helshoogte, not sure how serious it was, but did give wifey a bit of a scare

I did, after the big hill, guy hit the deck on his face - knocked out cold, and he was gurgling on his own blood.  Not pleasant.  Found out after the race that he was in hospital but was ok.

What was the story with with Lights by Linea riding in the fun batch?

They missed the cut off for the entries, Both League and One Tonner.

Organisers eventually allowed them to do a late entry but not for League.

Looking at the results on Racetec, seems like there is some untapped and unknown talent around.  :whistling:

A certain Roland Perold did the 170km out of J in the brilliant time of 4:21:09, placing him 20th overall for the day, on time .

Who needs 5 minute hillclimbs to boost your seeding when you can TT to kick ass times in the one tonner  :whistling:

I hope/assume there will be some corrections in the times as PPA cross check with that timing matt on Bothmaskop. I noticed I was photographed there and at the finishline, it was either my dodgy looking mug or is PPA taking this timing thing seriously?

Our team started in I batch and took it nice and easy up Hels. Things got a little spicy on the other side, and it took us a while to settle down and stop dropping our own riders. The Alan Gray team caught us and we worked well together until just before Stellenbosch where we all stopped for water.

I think that we were really quite lucky with the weather. It wasn't too hot. We had some good tailwinds, and whatever headwinds we had, weren't too bad.

Water tables and general organisation was good, we had no mechanicals and saw no crashes.

We shaved off almost an hour on last year's time and finished in 5:11 and in reasonable shape giving us some confidence for the DC in a few weeks time.
