So a snapped cable caused me to have to change my cables on my bike.

i replaced both brakes and gear cable inners and outers.

oh my word, BUTTER!

how i thought my gear change and brakes were OK is beyond me...

DO IT!

the question is how often to do it ?

I changed them after a year - about 9500km.

I think the simplest guideline is when it starts feeling harder to change gears and pull the brakes. Unfortunately, we all tend to accomodate for the small changes and dont realize its gone too far until pretty much bollocks, or the cable breaks.

For gear changes, if the change down the cassette is slow, then its very likely the housing and/or cable needs lubrication or change. This is because travel up the cassette depends on increased cable tension to overcome the tension in the little spring on the rear mech. When we change down, the tension in the gear cable is released at the shifter, which allows the rear mech spring's tension is change gears. If this action is slow, then it means either the mech spring is degraded, but more likely the shifter cable or housing is causing additional friction.

I change mine annually.

But it's gotta be mileage based. Someone who rides 500km a year reads this will end up spending $$$ for no reason

Well it won't be only milage based, there will be many deciding factors.

If someone only rides 500km per year, but lives near the ocean the cables might rust before they wear and need to be replaced aswell.

So there's no real exact benchmark to go by, but annually does sound like a good starting point.

I live by the coast, not a hint of rust. I have about 25000km on mine and cables are as good as ever. Then again, I keep them clean and well lubed.

Personally, I think we have become obsessed with servicing and replacing parts. I have never serviced my road bike, I just keep it clean and well lubed.

My post was not aimed directly at the ocean and rust, but was leaning more towards different conditions dictating different needs for maintenance.
