Wanna know whats worse? Cyclists don't even greet other cyclists anymore. On my saturday ride I encountered 37 other riders, yep I was counting, only 7 of those greeted. Sad, thought we were all doing this together or at least share the passion. Thats it I'm done sorry for hijacking the thread...partly.

It is not only the inclusion of single track, but chasing more numbers than what a trail is suited to handle by orginisers. But in saying that, the community then b!tches about high entry fees when orginisers limit the entries. You simply can't please all the people all the time. Being shouted at, and dealing with riders that causes danger to you and others is all part of racing, and not only mountain biking. Ever been in a sprint finish on a road race? Even for C batch? If screaming and shouting is not for you, start in the last batch and simply enjoy the access to areas that are usually off limits to us. Or if you are roadie-inclined, enjoy the marshalling, safe crossings and medical support, should you need it.

or 'The race was just boring singletrack and jeep track all the way' vs 'there was to much singletrack and we couldn't pass easily'

Sad thing is that the poor route setters only have a certain amount of land and roads/paths to work with and they try their best but as said above, you will never please anyone...

My gripe with the riders this weekend-

Sprint finishes- every 5th or 6th oke was trying to outsprint someone over the finish line, you had 60 odd km to race. But no, now you are sprinting over the line, almost taking out people who have stopped after the finish line in the limited run off area, kicking up dust where the camera guy's and timing guy's equipment and all your spectators are. That one position means minimal, and if it meant that much you could have raced harder earlier on rather...

Did only greet or only 7 greet back?

You could try the roadie way.

If you see another rider up ahead and you know you are likely to pass them, it is time to prep. You're gonna wanna start hammering it (i assume you werent hammering it before because your vision wasnt blurry and you could make out the rider in the distance). Try and get a nice big pump in your calves, as this is the region of your body deemed most desirable to members of the opposite sex and it will make the rider you are about to pass incredibly envious.

Now, as you pass the rider there are two trains of thought;
1. Keep hammering

2. Throw out a cheeky thumbs up to pretend like you are not suffering.

You are welcome.

yep I was counting,

If you build your cycling happiness & enjoyment on fellow cyclists greeting you - you are setting yourself up for a lifetime of disappointment.

I truly can't be bothered if someone don't feel like greeting me back

How many years ago was this now?  Yoh, that was heated for a while ekse!

You do realise that whenever I hear someone shouting "TREK!!!!", I chuckle to myself and think how lucky they are that you are not in front of them!

I agree with this. There is a rant on the TS3 thread from a rider that wants some money back cause he did not do 70km but 60km. I have been passed many time before by race snakes but never have they been rude.

Maybe it's time to become one of them screamers   then I wont feel cheesed off so much next time.

3. Make sure you take a few deep breaths before you pass them, so that when you say "good morning" as you pass them at speed, that you dont sound tired.

Absolutely!  and even worse, the other day I went shopping, trolley and all. Not even one shopper greeted back.

on my way back driving home, some other motorist luckily greeted back ...

I try take a few very deep breaths before the pass so the only sound I make is the whirring of my knobblies on the tar... And the rustle of the breeze through my Camelbak :whistling:

The day that a dude on knobblies and Camelbak passes me on the road, I would quietly book a First Class plane ticket to Cape Town, enjoy the trip down, get a limo from the airport to Table Mountain, take the cable car to the top, have a nice lunch up there and then proceed to jump off the damn mountain.
