Rouxle Posted August 31, 2016 Share Hi Guys I am a 23 year old girl, a bit overweight so I set a goal of completing my first Olympic style triathlon in November (the 5150). Only been training for a week - swimming in the morning before work and running when I don't have evening class (which is over weekends). Anyway, I need to buy a road bike. I am in no rush as I can train on a mountain bike in the mean time. I'll be going to a recycle sport shop tomorrow and will report back here In the mean time - what do you think about https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/204788-merida-scultura-juliet-904-carbon-small/ I have been on gumtree as well: http://www.gumtree.co.za/a-sports-bicycles-fitness/port-elizabeth/fuji-altair-for-sale/1001757504980910412502409 http://www.gumtree.co.za/a-sports-bicycles-fitness/port-elizabeth/raleigh-tri6000/1001757164740910266163709 http://www.gumtree.co.za/a-sports-bicycles-fitness/port-elizabeth/road-bike-for-sale/1001699564350910444487609 Budget isn't really an issue but I'd prefer going second hand in case it's a one time thing (which I am hoping it's not) Thanks! All those bikes are different sizes so clearly not all options for you.Have you established the correct size for you yet?
pe3nguin Posted August 31, 2016 Share Those bikes are very different sizes. The first thing you wanna work out is what size frame is most appropriate for your build.
Allrounder Posted August 31, 2016 Share Go to your LBS and get them to help you get the right size. If you buy a good second hand bike, you will get more bike for your buck. Once you start cycling and get fit, you will keep on cycling. budget will become an issue, because you will start upgrading........
shaper Posted August 31, 2016 Share As everyone says, first get the bike shop to measure and see what size bike/frame you require... then you can start hunting for a bike. Welcome to the hub
Avo Posted August 31, 2016 Share Sorry Rouxle, I don’t mean to hijack your thread but I am also needing advice on getting a road bike for my wife. We are both keen MTB’s and want to do the 94.7 on road bikes this year. I managed to get a road bike for myself from a friend. I have no idea what to look for when choosing a road bike for my wife? We measured her at the bike shop and her size is 50cm.Will only probably be using the road bike once a year for the 94.7 and maybe some training rides before and thus would like to spend under 5k. Is this reasonable or will you not get a great bike for that price? Just want a bike for her that is reliable and relatively up to date in terms of technology. Would prefer to buy second hand.Looked at this ad: https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/207726-used-haro-cr-20-alu-tiagra-50cm/Any advice will be much appreciated. Avo Posted August 31, 2016 Share Did that last year and the guys on road bikes flew past us on the down hills. Gearing not the same on a mountain bike.
amr63 Posted October 9, 2016 Share continuing with the thread-jack...Did that last year and the guys on road bikes flew past us on the down hills. Gearing not the same on a mountain bike.be cheaper to change your chainring/rear cassette to improve the gearing if you are really just going to use the road bike for one race a year. If you go for this option, also consider getting road slicks for your MTBs to reduce rolling resistance.
Eugene Posted October 10, 2016 Share Hi Rouxle Did you ever find a bike. I'm just curious, are you from PE?
