Cape Town to Clanwilliam

Looks like the N7 is the most direct route to ride. I've ridden as far as the West Coast National park but no further. What's the road like beyond this point? Shoulder, safety etc.

From Veldrif there is no shoulder, but traffic is not much. I would not advice riding that route for the next 2 months as it is flower season and tourists with their eyes on flowers and not on the road are plenty. A friend did ride that road a year or so back and he said it was ok.

N7 have shoulders, but way to dangerous.

If you can deal with dirt, and you have time and fitness, then do this one:

Durbanville, to Wellington (R302, R312, R44)

Wellington to Ceres (R43)

Ceres to Prince Alfred Hamlet (R303)

Prince Alfred Hamlet to Op Die Berg (R303)

Op Die Berg to Citrusdal (R303) Mostly tar, but also gravel

Citrusdal to Clanwilliam (Ou Kaapse Road) Gravel

Sorry, don't know the Ou Kaapse Road number, but it is good gravel and runs along the Olifants River all the way from Citrusdal to Clanwilliam, opposite the river and parallel to the N7. You want to avoid the N7 at all costs. Just too fast and too many idiots and big trucks. I would call the above "the scenic route", but really, if I have to be honest, it should be called "the climbing route". It includes some truly amazing climbs. First is Bains Kloof Pass, then Mitchells Pass, then Gydo Pass, then down from the Cederberg into Citrusdal (can't remember which pass). For me anyway, that would be more than a day or twos' worth of riding.

Thanks for the replies. This looks like an awesome route. 300k's with lots of vertical. I mapped it and added Bains Kloof from Wellington.

Awesome trip.We used to park the bakkies in Citrusdal and ride the mbikes from there along the river and then to Kromrivier and back for a day out.The N7 is dangerous but inevitable for a road bike trip.I met up with some hubbers years ago in Calvinia on a tandem riding from Cape Town to JHB for charity. They did the N7 and went up Van Ryns Pass. The most dangerous thing they encountered on the route was WIND

Im more or less doing this exact route in reverse next weekend, over 2 days.

1st up Cederberg 100 miler race. After the race cycle down to Prince Alfred Hamlet to stay the night.

2nd leg on day 2 is to cycle home to Goodwood.

Can't wait cause It's going to be Epic.

I thought you wanted to cycle on the N7. Please don't. But I see people already responded with good routes

Sounds great.. enjoy!

I guess if you are in a group & with a safety car behind you it would be ok, but I think it would be a bit of a death wish to cycle there on your own with all the trucks and speeding cars
