Struggling to take old tubless tyre off the wheel

On a serious note though, make sure the bead of the tyre is free of the rim bead all the way round by pushing both beads towards the centre of the rim. You should feel it pop free.

 

I have a feeling you may be trying to get a tyre lever in there without first unseating the bead, which is pretty much impossible.

Yes, I was trying to insert a tyre lever. You're right, the tyre must come off the rim bead first. The plumbing plier worked a charm for that.

Also had loads of issues getting my tire off the rim.  Eventually found this video.  Watch from around 1:30.  Don't pull on the spokes but rather the rim.  It takes about 10 seconds to get both sides of.  Once you have broken a little bit of the bead of the tyre off the rim, use some tyre levers to do the rest.

Had a set of KilleBees on a set of rims.  Took me 3 hours to get it on the rim.  Just glad I traded both the tyre and rims.  The combo just did not work.  Cousin told me he took a knife t the tyres as he could not get it off as well. 

 

Stunning tyres, just a pain to get them to fit on what I had.

Nice advice. I'll try the spoke pull next time. And I'll try the a bit of soap as well to seat the new one. Thanks!

Most rims have a depression/groove in the centre. You need to break the tyre bead away from the rim flange towards that centre groove ALL THE WAY AROUND. Then get a tyre lever under the bead if you must. Once you get the bead into that centre groove it gives enough slack that most tyres can be removed by hand without tyre levers......but some combinations are troublesome.

1) Fill with sealant

2) Pump past max

3) Leave in the sun in an enclosed container

4) Wait for explosion

5) Remove from container wearing latex gloves.

It's breaking the bead that can be easier said than done... You don't understand the pain and suffering it can cause until you come across one of those wheel/tyre combo's! I'm 3 days into a personal battle with a new set of 29" carbon wheels and some Vittoria tyres (2 days to get the tyres on but now can't get them off!) - most of the broken tyre levers have been a result of them being thrown against walls out of sheer frustration!

Managed to seat the new tyre in the first attempt. I smeared a bit of silicone paste around the tyre bead. Tricky to get the second half of the tyre in but after a while I got the hang of it. The trick is to pull the tyre back at the end as much as possible while using the tyre lever to snap the last bit in. Not bad for my first tubeless replacement :thumbup:

I'd think long and hard about running tyres that take 3 days to get off.

 

What are you going to do when you're in the bundus, get a flat and have to install a tjoop?

Both tyres and rims have maximum inflation pressures. One to prevent tyre bursts and the other to prevent rim flanges being sheared off by the outward force.

 

Many tyres and rims are limited to around 4 bar max. inflation pressure. I usually need about 3 bar to seat a bead on a tubeless tyre.

 

A quick calc shows that 3 bar in a 29er tyre exerts about 350 kilogram force outwards on each rim flange (based on typical 5mm flange depth).

Thanks for the info. The tyre didn't seat properly and it lost all the pressure. I pumped just before 3 bar and after I heard a couple of pops but clearly it wasn't enough.

Sure it was jest. My Geax on WTB is a lot less tolerant anything near 3 bar and it explodes off the rim if it gets hot.
