Easy - sign Froome. Just a question of money.

Othewise not realistic imo.

The feeder system needs to be fixed - there is a glaring absence of TT, hilltop finishes and Euro style road stage races in SA.

Vision 2020, which is as before the goal to get an african rider onto the tour podium in two years time in July

With a picture of maincheese and nic dlamini*

sure nibbles, froome and maybe porte might not be around.

but you're going to have to get past yates^2, bardet, pinot, quintana, landa, Aru, dumoulin and all the others standing in line. and then there's always the next big thing coming along too

I fail to see how DDD are going to be a GC superpower that quickly. Maybe if they had massive training camps in ethiopia they could find a natural in the rough. They could pull a Cannondale fluke like last year, but then they'll need a Uran first.

*he's brilliant, but not exactly GC material at TdF yet

You need to get past this dude first and he is going to get around for next ten years minimum.

So if the Cav thing doesn't work out on the tour, what then?

My feeling is there is  a new generation of sprinters who  will be taking the honors like this hombre

All the eggs in one (fragile) basket. Big gamble. I really hope it comes off

Edvald really stepped up last year! Not sure Cav still has the goods to deliver....

Who knows, he just hasn't had enough races for anyone to know where he is this year but remember he was dead by and buried by everyone two tours ago and the won 4 stages in a pretty good sprinters field. I'm not sure that DD can fight with QS in controlling the lead out on the flats but Gaviria and Cav' are the two most capable riders to be able to freelance in the last couple of kms thanks to their track backgrounds. I hope he collects 2 stages. Kittel seems to be struggling with something either the lead out or just new team issues, Griepel has won a few smaller races but hasn't featured in the bigger ones, Groenewegan (sp?) has been looking good so far (10 wins) but has gone quiet a bit but claimed he'd win 4 stages last year and buy himself a ferrari and then disappeared for 20 stages only to blitz it on the final stage.

Other key sprinters in the mix are:

- Sagan: always Sagan. Never classed as a pure 'sprinter' but beats them all in the world pretty well or comes second. reckon he has the opportunity to wrap up the green Jersey by the end of the first 9 days, going to be fired up after last year

- Kristoff: Who knows. Classics sprinter rather than GC sprinter? Said he was 2kgs over weight less than 2 weeks ago.

- DeMare: let's see if he can cause some more crashes and get Sagan kicked out again

- Colbrelli: 2nd tier

- Bouhanni: won other GC stages, never higher than 3rd in TdF. Has started winning a bit after some brutal hazing in the press from his DS for the best part of 3 months

- Degenkolb: Roubaix stage?

- Averamaet: can out sprint Sagan but doesn't feature much in classic GC gallops for the line

- Mathews: won green last year by the fact Sagan wasn't there. Not a great bunch sprinter up against the main guys. Loves a slope and a hard run in in the last 5kms but up against GVA, Sagan, Gaviria, Kristoff and DeMare in that respect so not a big advantage.

Should be a great spectacle for sure and I hope for DD EBH and Cavendish can grab a stage and Pauwels / Slagter can try to poach a chance as well. Slagter as an great outside chance for the Mur stage.

I don’t think they really had a choice to put their eggs in the Cav basket.

It’s the only real play they have.

Vermote and Slagter could get a stage win too.

Sure, but they could do that regardless.

True...

When cav has raced this year he has been properly beaten when contesting sprints..yes he had some bad luck.. but Viviani gave him a proper lesson in Italy less than 2 weeks ago...so i am not sure he will be able to beat Groenewegen and Gaviria..

Rumour has it Cav has been putting a lot of track time in, working on his speed and explosive sprints... I guess we will see where he is at the first few days with the flat finishes

He is horribly short of racing days!

I reckon he'll arrive at the sprints too tired to give it a proper tilt.

I'd love for Edvald Boasson Hagen to take a stage this year.

This team might end up doing excellent lead-outs so Cav can deliver a few 10th places. He was entirely outclassed in California against the same guys he'll be taking on at TdF.  He hasn't looked like a winner for two years now.

Just glad they are leaving Cummings at home.. unless there's something in it for himself he is useless as a teammate .
