Hout Bay Incident: Do you know this cyclist?

Why would a roadie carry pepper spray with him?

Same reason people carry it on the trail. There is less but roadies are still a target for a jacking or two. There have been a few incidents in Constantia and Cape Point as well as the bike path into town.

My pepper spray is with me at all times when riding, Road or Mtb.

Came to my rescue once on a fairly deserted road when a Taxi started harassing me.

Long story short, after cutting me off for the 4th time, he was stationary for a looong time after I left the scene.

Spartikus and I took a tandem spin from the Southern Suburbs to Llandudno yesterday morning and had 3 close encounters with motorists, which we left behind as diplomatically as we could, but in 2 of those instances the motorists indicated with a contrite wave of a hand and a smile that they screwed up and we acknowledged and let it go. The 3rd instance saw me almost park the tandem on the back seat of a Discovery (he stopped dead in front of us after moving to turn left into a Waterfront parkade - he stopped to allow some runners to cross in front of him). I'm always cautious riding on this stretch and always have a plan B mindset for the traffic. We indicated his error and he grumpily said he just decided to allow the runners to cross, and so we just let it go .. nobody was harmed, I was just a little incensed, but we let it go so that we could enjoy our ride, which we did. Spartikus thought we were just going for a coffee in Camps Bay, but then I decided that a quick Llandudno addition would be in order first .. I forgot about him being partially-sighted and so he must've thought that we were taking longer than it should've, plus some extra elevation  :whistling:

I must just say that the cycling lanes through Woodstock are practically useless with all the cars parked on them !!  - I had a momentary devious thought that involved a tin of spray paint to administer punishment

Is that a Cyclelab rain jacket on the cyclist in the background? Perhaps someone from Cyclelab saw what happened. That guy seems to be reaching for a phone.

The person in the cyclelab jersey is pausing strava......

Since when does the sex of a person using a car make them any less dangerous?

I was almost run over by a woman on Beyers today. If she hit me, I would just be as dead as if it was a man who hit me.... Just saying

Now if Bonnie walks into a bank with a 45 and tries to rob it A: do you giver her a hug and hand over the cash or B - Pull out your pump action and see her off?

None of us really know the facts but I am willing to bet there was a bit too much testosterone and heat of the moment bad behaviour on both sides in this story. Hopefully both have learned something from it. Point is, we are very vulnerable on bikes and bad behaviour from motorists can be life threatening, as opposed to merely inconvenient, such as if a cyclist blocks your lane for a few seconds.

Thats is a very good point!

That is why I subscribe to making sure to thank those motorist who take the time to wait, they recognised your point too and they deserve a thank you for that!

The last couple of years in SA I also reverted  to doing that. Also when dealing with irrate motorists, I have found that a friendly wave out of the blue also tended to take the wind out of their attitudes.  A technique I also use here in Germany although hardly ever experiencing problems here the most aggresive reaction I have had from one or two motorists involved a little hooting in the passing.  You must see their reaction when you give them a friendly smile.  They actually feel embarrased.

Shu.

I rode From HB to Noordhoek and back & to Town & back on Saturday and yesterday from HB to Camps & back.

Generally the road users along this stretch are very respectful of each other as everyone is out for a good time. The cyclists. The guys out on their Harley's. The rich cats in their Ferrari's & Porches enjoying the great road.

This whole affair saddens me. I love living in HB and love riding those coastal roads. I hope this gets cleared up but based on the general feedback seen on Facebook we are all scum.
