SLX or XT - worth saving money here?

Ok so I am now in a position to give a bit more of an opinion on this topic since I have received the complete groupsets in both SLX M7000 and XT M8000 (1x11 parts).

I weighed all parts individually however the SLX brake set came with the J04C metal finned pads which weigh a smidgen more than those without.

The HG601 and HG701 chains differed by a few grams.

SLX M7000:

Crankset - 604g

Chainring (32T) - 101g

Cassette 11-42 - 487g

RD - 327g

Shifter - 136g

Front brakeset - 289g

Rear brakeset - 302g

Total=2246g

XT M8000

Crankset - 609g

Chainring (34T) - 100g

Cassette 11-42 - 444g

RD - 277g

Shifter - 140g

Front brakeset - 268g

Rear brakeset - 282g

Total=2120g

Difference=126g!!! Or lets even it out to 140g's if we replace the finned pads and compare like-for-like.

I was really shocked at the crank weight differences and since holding them both in my hand I actually now prefer the SLX finish over the XT. The painted XT surface as well as markings apparently scrub off easily whereas the SLX looks and feels a little more robust!

The XT cassette weight savings is in the composite web mount for the larger rings but the material appears to be the same.

The XT RD has an aluminium pulley cage over the steel one on the SLX. Sealed pulley bearings on the XT are nice and smooth though  :P. Overall look of SLX is nicer.

XT shifter is definitely more "clunky" when changing and requires a bit more effort to select the gears both up and down!

Bar the finish, a slight weight difference, dimpled lever and the free stroke adjustment (which would be set once and never again if I actually felt like tinkering) I feel there is no significant reason why the XT brakeset is really that much better than the SLX!!!

If it wasn't for the dimpled levers (which I am yet to try out and note any real value) I would quite honestly take the SLX in a heart beat  ^_^ .

My wife saved 760g by converting her Scott Spark 960 from entry to-mid-ranged 3x9 components to the SLX 1x11. She is over the moon at how smooth the shifting is compared to before and still gets caught out by how powerful the newer and more sophisticated brakes are (using resin G02S pads and her original RT54 rotors).

While the XT may be the run-of-the-mill performance groupset to have, knowing what I do now, I would not waste the extra money on the XT groupset cause the SLX M7000 will do it just as well if not better :D

If I recall correctly there was a blind test in a German mountain bike magazine 2 years ago.

The outcome was that no test person was able to determine a difference between XT and SLX and also not between X7 and X9. (Shifting performance only)

Which model XT and SLX? I think the pre-7000 and 8000 were the same in shift feel!

The next time you walk around your LBS find bikes with the new models and "shift" for yourself and let us know if you feel the difference ;)

I am going to find out shortly, first hand, as to the real world performance difference. Gone with SLX drivetrain on my new bike to replace the xt I had on my bike that was stolen. I would rather spend more on suspension and wheels. Plus my lbs says I am tad hard wearing on my drivetrain.

One other way to look at it would be to combine the sets by going with the XT RD and cassette to save on the weight and get the nice sealed pulley bearings and then SLX everything else.

:D Win win  :P

Will wait till Friday before I start the Ultegra vs 105 topic

It should be 10 speed Record vs everything else

I think that having a quality top end shifter is probably more important than the derailleur. That and making sure the cables and outers are fresh.  I run a Saint 10 speed shifter with XT derailleur and Sunrace cassette.  Its streets ahead of the old SLX shifter.

I have also found that XT derailleurs tend not to be the strongest in the cage department. Then again I am rather heavy on the things and crash a lot.

Funny you should say that. I accidentally ordered a XT rear / SLX shifter when spec'ing my upgrade kit and only noticed when it was delivered. I was feeling a little doff about it but now apparently I'm 'in the know'. Schweet!

my 2 cents is the following - after riding both groupsets on the same bike over the same trails in equal conditions and the groupset was new in both instances the better modulation of braking from the XT to SLX is about the biggest difference, albeit the trail needs to be pretty slippery to even notice that difference.

If you leave your morning drol for after the ride you will negate the 140grams or so of weight saving too so all in all just go SLX unless you need to KOM some descents on wet trails, then get the XT brakes.

I had XTR and XT 11spd on first tallboy and SLX with XT shifter on second one(budget cut) and it shifted easier much lighter. Could also be helped by the sunrace cassette ratios which is much better than Shimano's imo. And as far as brakes go between the XT M8000 and SLX M7000 no difference except for the badge.

Between the two, SLX will do the job just fine. Do consider Sram aswell. I recently went from M8000 der and shifter to NX rear der and GX shifter with sunrace 11/46 casette. Loved the Shimano but found the rear der just to soft and vunrable to my liking. Sram has a more mechanical feel to it, but that is personal choice.
