  1. To treat other road and trail users with respect, dignity and courtesy.
  2. To obey the rules of the road as far as it it practicably possible in any given circumstance.
  3. Not to litter in any environment in which I ride. (This includes but is not limited to sport supplement wrappers, used Co2 canisters, punctured tubes and the like in races and while training or on recreational rides.)
  4. To pay my trail entry fees each time I ride on a trail that requires such payment.
  5. To display the correct Number Board, Club Board and the like where trail or club rules prescribe it.
  6. To never be a "rogue rider" on a trail
  7. To wear a helmet while cycling on any road or trail.
  8. To show respect for Marshals, Referees and other officials during organised events.
  9. To ride in a safe manner, not endangering others or myself.

Edit: Added point 9.

We all have our own idea of what is practical and possible and therein lies one of the biggest problems.... I suspect this could be a convienant escape clause.

SwissVan, I know it leaves this one a bit loose and open to interpretation but if one were to agree to 100% stick to the rules one would break that commitment often. For eg, riding inside the "yellow line" is technically illegal but far safer. Therein lies the challenge. It should not be seen as an escape hatch for example when riding 5 abreast outside the cycling lane in the Cradle!

Yeah I know, you know.... but there are always people who push the envelope

Sometimes I say the best ideal is to "treat others the way you would like them to treat you" but even then "people" manage to abuse the concept.

I truly believe that this is a great start.

I am wokring on something at the moment and have a question.

Agreed on the "Golden Rule" I think it one of the cornerstones of ethics. Unfortunately you get masochists though...

That said, I believe that there are more "good" than "bad" people around so I find that I must curb my natural instinct to be more pessimistic than optimistic.

I mentioned this before. I've had some incidents (with taxi drivers particularly) and each time pulled up to them with a smile and a very friendly "Awee, give me some space too chief" and so far all I received was a thumbs up, hand shakes, "Akkoord", "Sorry man" responses. And it doesn't matter who had the right of way.

I know how vulnerable I feel every time I cycle and apart from plenty of prayers, I just think it the best practice to treat all with as humility as I can muster. And I admit to reminding myself of this action when I'm about to have a hissy fit due to some drivers idiotic bahaviour.

I always thank those motorists that wait till its safe to pass, I acknowledge that its a ball ache but do make an effort to make it easier.

I also alert those motorists that over take when its not safe to do so and have endangered their lives and mine.  Looks like that < but with only one are movement.
