Scared of Cape Town

Ok, I admit the topic is a bit of click bait  :whistling:

I have an opportunity to work in CT for a long term contract and really excited about it.

So besides from been a bit nervous of angry tear gas wielding cyclist, what actually scares me is RUST vs BIKES

When doing races or spending time on holiday in Cape Town, even though I always wash my bike after a ride (mountain bike that is) I always seem to pick up a bit of rust on the drive train.

So the question is, how do you avoid it as best as possible?

What lubes do you use? For rides and after washing?

I will store the bikes in a garage but will be pretty close to the sea.

Any other experienced views on how best to avoid (if possible) my biggest nightmare.

Just use a bit more lube - I like Squirt as my go to.  I live close to the sea, ride outside every day and never get rust on my drive train.

I've also been lucky enough not to have a run in with pepper spray man

This does raise something I wondered about a while ago.  My brother-in-law's laaitie's Muna balance bike basically disintegrated in a year in Balito. Frame, wheels, components.  All one big corroded piece of junk.  Is that even possible?

Find a rust problem only happens when I leave my bike standing for a while and FORGET to put extra lube on my chain.

Normally minimal grease on the outside, but when away for a while and bike stand, I put some more lube to cover the outside of the chain too.

Problem solved.

It is a non- event dude, don't worry. Lived here most of my life and the only time I have had rust issues on a drivetrain is if I wash it or ride in the rain and don't wipe and lube it afterwards. That applies anywhere in the world. (I lived 150m from the ocean for more than 5 years and it wasn't an issue there either) If you are still super concerned clean your chain with paraffin instead of washing it
