For me a SS is just a bike. It is however a bike that doesn't make it feel like a training ride or an obligation. When I need to clear my mind and have a moment of reflection I take the SS out. None of my other bikes allow that.

Don't be one of those SS riders who preaches like a crazed religious zealot, don't try and convince people or explain why you ride a SS. When people enquire why you ride a SS just reply "because I do". Keep it your dirty little secret...

Nailed it . .

In my Rapide basket I loaded the following...

30 narrow wide front

18 rear.

Living in Bloemfontein. So relatively flat.

Want to use it to play around with. BMX riding with my son. Once in a while commuting to work. Coffee ride now and then.

Is my gear selection correct?????

30 front / 18 rear?

Will be on a Giant XTC 29er with rigid fork.

Have 2 nice road bikes , nice carbon dual. Nice gravel bike and a BMX, so this will be no 6....eish

Or will 32 front and 20 rear be better?

32/20  and 30/18  is not very much different  1.6 vs 1.666667

Will you be using a chain  "tensioning" device? (don't think there such a word)

Then I would rather put in my Basket a 32T upfront and then a  20T, a 18T and a 16T.

Then you can swap-out the rear sprocket and get a ratio that work for you in Bloem.

Let's say it is the 18T.

Then you have the option of fitting your 20T if you go ride at a more hilly area than Bloem.

Even with my sliding rear wheel, I change from a 18T  (wheel forward) to a 16T or 15T (sliding the wheel back) without having to change the chain.

Just my 2 cent.

I use a 34 18 in jhb - gives me enough range to cruise with my kids on the flat and keep up with eddy on his road bike except for some downhills - 100rpm is about 25kph -.Sheldon browns gear ratio calculator is a good tool to fiddle with and you can.find a gear on a geared bike that works for you and copy that ratio over.

Monark, this is why I am posting here, in the SS forum. Out in the world, so to speak, I could care less who rides what. Honestly, as long as people are riding and having fun, it's all good. What they ride is irrelevant.

The last thing I want to do is try and convert others, explain why I ride SS or attempt to justify why. If I come across as over-zealous, it is because I know you lot (fellow SS-ers) will get it. I've found something I truly enjoy and what works for me, that's all.

There's no point in saying what I said in my OP to anyone other than single speeders. They won't get it, nor do I expect them to. If you haven't ridden SS, you'll think I'm institution bound, or something like that. I know, because I used to think you chaps were stark raving mad. Took me a year of reading this forum before I went SS.

Yes, it is just a bike, but my SS is my one and only bike, so no matter where I go, this is what I ride. It's been a very interesting and educational journey. Glad I went this route.

Have fun, ride on.

Still don't get it but with my thick skin maybe I never will.  It might take me more than a year to convert as the wallet is pretty thin right now.

Henning, would love to ride your bike.  Maybe sometime soon.....working on it.

30 x 18 in Bloem, you're going to spin out very quickly. I'd suggest that you go with a 32, and add a 16 to the basket.

I cheated on my SS today, on a full squish, big travel, many geared, Tupperware bike. Now don't get me wrong, it's very nice and all, but I was happy when my bike forgave me for my indiscretion.
