Stage 5: Pedara to Messina (159km)

The Giro gives this a stage a rating of ......

It's basically a down hill swoosh along north-east Sicily from Pedara on the slopes of Etna through to a circuit finish around Messina - via a couple of climbs and some stunning scenery.

The stage starts from Pedara, new stage town as far as the Giro is concerned. The first 40 km are fairly complex, as the route passes through several urban areas, with roundabouts, traffic dividers, pedestrian islands, setts paving and speed bumps being the main obstacles.

Then comes an uphill stretch (Fornazzo KOM summit), followed by a fast-running and technical descent. The roadway narrows at points in Castiglione di Sicilia.

Next, the route climbs up Taormina and descends to the feed zone along partly narrowed roads.

Here the roadway becomes wider and mostly straight, leading to the final circuit in Messina

The final 6.3-km circuit shall be covered once, on wide and straight avenues alternating with 90-degree bends. The route takes a U-turn with 1,500 m to go, then a long home straight (descending slightly in the first part) leads all the way to the finish. The home stretch is 1,500 m long, on 7.5-m wide, flat and asphalt road.

Sprint trains will need to be on their mettle from 6km to 2km, However after that it's a straight run for home to finish on the Via Garibaldi Palazzo Zanca. It's the same finish circuit as used on stage 9 in 1972; the year Eddy Merckx pulled on the pink jersey in Sicily and never took it off again.

Ewan should have the best shot today, with Greipel and Gaviria hot on his heels.

Other sprinters who will try their luck against the above mentioned: Nizzolo, Modolo, Bennett and DDD's Gibbons and Sbaragli.

Never seen a guy have more bad luck than Ewan in the Giro. Maybe he can change it today. I think perhaps he wants it too much and is too eager and trigger happy - forcing mistakes. Greipel got a win for his mommy through his wealth of experience.

Ewan is suuuper fast though.

Its a pity that the mic's the riders wear are not always on. if they were recorded then racist or verbal abuse could be found and action taken.

we can only see physical abuse but not hear the verbal. so it's only physical that gets acted on.

It would also be good TV if we were given some discussions between the riders or between the riders and the team directors, like in F1.

I was watching the Arsenal v Man U game on Sunday (think it was a SkySports stream). During the game, the commentators had to apologise for the bad language used by the players.

And the players rolling around with life threatening injuries...

Just another day in the life of a pro cyclist. Jeremy Roy. Hard. As. Nails.

Lets just ask Mclaren and Honda how much they enjoy having Alonso on the radio letting them know how amazing their millions are being spent every weekend.

Cyclists are there to ride their bikes. Not talk.
