Yes, Patch'

Every sales employee represents the brand in that interaction

They have the power and responsibility to break or build the brand

The brand exists to serve its customer base

And your pops was served poorly

Hope this brand (and respective store) can engage their brand anbassadors and up their performance (don't screw the the customer - the very reason the brand exist)

#integrity

The man who serviced my car carried the same name as the dealership, knew me by name and made every effort to make me feel welcome, often going out of his way to accommodate my booking and even delivering the car to me on the rare occasion.

This wasn't Gabriel by any chance? I think he also had a brother I never met - a real enthusiast for Italian toys and very helpful indeed  (I had to think long and hard about what his name was because I have had no contact in about 12 years)

I think this counts for any industry. When I walk into any store with something in mind and some one tries to sell me something I don't want/need I leave never to come back. Sometimes people just need to take the time to listen to the customer and give them what they want.

Absolutely agree with this. Have been shopping for a new bike for my GF and we have been in many stores. I am happy that the shops are trying to sell stuff, that is their job. However, my GF is very specific regarding budget and what she likes/wants and after explaining her needs every sales  person we have been speaking to tries to sell something that is very far removed from what she expressed. Without fail. We will keep on trying different shops and we will find the right bike and sales person who will actually listen to the buyers need.

Joe Viglietti.

Another family member is equally amazing by volunteering an immense amount of time to the Table Mountain National Park and seeking nothing in return.. but this would be off topic if not for the chance that maybe there are a few concept store owners forgetting what life is still like down below, that is if "caste" comes into this.

Thing that sticks out to me is the stupidity of the sales person... someone walks in the shop and wants something, has to be the easiest sale on earth. Yes sure sir, what colour and size would you like that in?

The problem for Spez is, it is a brand problem, no matter how good the product may be. Remember; perception is everything... Can you imagine how frustrating it must be for Spez, you have guys on every podium in the world and then an untrained sale-person in some shop in some "third-world" country that can possibly undo that hard work. Extreme I know... but thats brand perception.

It's not just Specialised..

Had a similar experience with a bike shop in Johannesburg recently when I tried to buy one of their flagship brands (they are a stockist). Their response was "No Brand A's right now, but here's last years Someotherbrand at 50% off, maybe you'd like that instead." Not lekker for a R50k+ bike purchase - I'll always feel cheated, and I really don't feel like having the argument about why their old stock is just as good as the bike I have in my head.

It's a bit like walking into a Toyota dealership and being offered a discount on last years' Land Rover instead. (This is the feeling you get when you get back from the shops and you wonder why you came home with the stuff you actually bought..)

Some basic sales training maybe? Try sell the guy the bike he asks for, or at least talk to him about why he wants that one..  I'm in JHB Northern suburbs, so there are maybe 20 bike shops in a 15km radius. All it took was a phonecall to another shop for them to make the effort of finding the bike I wanted. I'm still convinced I made the right bike choice in the first place and now I have a new bike shop that I like too.

Is that the "old man"?

With grey hairy chest? haha.. no, but I still pride myself that I was worthy enough to shake hands, albeit very greasy, with a family member working on my car among some seriously impressive finely-tuned race machines.. you know, like Specialized.
