'Simulating' gear ratios

I'm asking this in the way it makes sense in my head - if I'm not making sense ignore me.

Crankset 42x32x22

casette 3x9 11-32

is it possible to simulate what riding with a 1x11 (30T) 11-42 would feel like?

so say Uni go to your normal trail and just ride in the middle chain ring on everything ... along those lines?

Yes, no, que?

disclaimer.  I did standard grade maths.

I've fiddled with that gear calculator app but literally for a few minutes and I don't know what any of it means :(

i assumed shimano drive train components. Darker green is close or perfect match, and light green is closest approximation.

so if you want to feel how say the 1x system feels when you on the 19T at the back, goto your current setup on the 22 chainring and 14T cog at the back.

Ok we're getting warmer - that's what I needed

For the one I posted, pick speed as the display. Then you can see that your low gears go slow and your big gears faster in km/h then you can compare the 2 lowest gears on your options. the slower the gear goes - the easier it will feel. the faster it goes the harder it will feel. I usually start with the extremes, compare the 2 lowest gears vs the 2 highest gears and then you can start comparing the gears in between.

I didn't really get the ratios but the speeds make sense to me.

added the simulation list for convenience. hope that helps a bit.

I really should understand this stuff by now but I guess I never made the effort to understand it other than a when must I shift gears..

Thanks for the explanations, I just need to stop being lazy and make the effort to understand it.

Ok don't worry about the 9 spd or 11 spd. Just worry about the slowest gear and the fastest one.

You will probably start with a 32t chainring, same as middle ring on your current 3x setup. So just go into middle ring and stay there for a few rides. At the fast end (11 cog at rear) it will be the same

Since your biggest rear cog is 32 you'll likely need something easier. A 1x11 with 32t chainring and 42 big rear cog is about the same as your 22 front ring with second biggest cog at the rear.

So you'll lose only your big rear cog when climbing and your top speed will be as fast as you can go in the current middle front ring . In between, you'll have 9 other gears.

Depending which cranks you have there are options to go 30t and even 28t front rings. A 30t front ring with 42 rear is almost the same as your current granny but now your top speed is a bit slower.

Flippen nice topic Uni!

I have moved from a 3 x 9 to a 2 x 10. I am sure there is some overlap.

BUT! While on paper the gear rations are the same, the actual feel of them on the 2 x 10 (new setup) is totally different. I dont have the words to explain how, but they just feel different. They have taken some getting used to. What I dont like is how quickly it feels like you out spin a gear and then have to change, but sometimes the change is just to big on the ratio.

Preferred the smaller gaps on the 3 x 9 set up.

But that could just be due to lack of strength or something in the head. Just giving you my perceptions

Ja that's my concern - but my thinking is while I might not be strong enough now , I will be :)

If i try riding currently on a fast flat in my middle chain ring - it's impossible - spin out like crazy but I'm also trying to focus on higher cadence riding and less grinding (which is working out lekker for me)

Having a bail out gear which sits unused might be good peace of mind but I often find I gear down too much and don't have traction to get up short little climbs so I imagine it will be quite a change that will take getting use to but if I can simulate it as best as possible now on my current set up - that might not be a bad thing.

You speak Uni!!!!

That was what I was thinking of going with - arrgghhh Sophie's choice ... but i'm not exactly zooting around now at high speeds so maybe I'll be fine.

My feel is you dont need to be strong to ride a 2x10. The gear ratios allow you to spin rather easily. So you need to adjust to the spinning a lot as opposed to "grinding". I found this weekend that on some of the hills, by going to the lowest gear, I could actually bring my HR down going up hill, by pedaling slower and hence moving alot slower and just spin (learnt a whole new skill of balancing a bike while moving so slowly!)
