Not sure why everyone is surprised by so many U.K. Riders in top 10, they have ridden a large chunk of life in wet conditions. Look, even Yates put time into Contador, Quintana and chaves.

Then you look at someone like Louis from sunny SA, same time as Chaves...

Or you can just blame the Vittoria rubber Valverde, igzore etc were on today, but we don't want to get into pro's wnd tires!!

For a rider with no previous serious injuries and age against him it's not good. But he could sign up for zwift and win the Veulta, would not surprise me.

Apparently the Veulta is in doubt as well ... its a  real shame, he is at the top of the the game and his team needs his leadership

I think Nairo may have a better chance now he is gone, whole team working for one guy. Valverde has yet to bury himself for Quintana, rather sits on wheel then closes gaps without taking Q along. Great racer, don't think a great team mate.

Could be eyeballs-out from the gun then. No one wanting to lose sight of the front of the pack.

Here's hoping

I still think he is a dirty rider, but can you imagine the pain he must of felt today when those three knobs were sliding him around the road trying to move him!!! That must have been crazy sore.

He is one of those.. "it's okay I'll walk it off people"... so when he didn't get up I knew it was over for him.

Will be a long recovery.

Yeah my first thoughts were leave the poor guy's legs alone.

Still think he could have done more to prevent his himself hitting the barriers like he did, looks like he impacted the foot/legs of the barriers. Tony Galopan hit the barriers at about the same speed and seams to be fine.

He could of at least put his foot out and try absorb some of the impact. I initially thought the damage came from him dabbing a foot before he actually hit the deck.

What are the actual rules regarding bikes that can be used for TT? Can you only use TT bikes or are road bikes acceptable? Reason I ask is wouldn't a normal road bike with TT bars be more beneficial in these conditions? You would just have so much more control on a normal road bike.

you can use a road bike but on such a flat fast course you would loose big time. fastest option is still TT bike and go easy in the corners.

Some remarks:

Sky brought their A game - lots have been said about the form of the favourites, but Sky looks up for the challenge.

Good win for GT. I wonder if Sky would let him contest if CF struggles? They have been there before...

Had to say how tne form of the other challenbers are - CF is on a different peaking plan than previously, perhaps to target the Vuelta as well. NQ took a risk by doing the Giro. Porte looks strongest arguably, but he always had that one bad day in the past.

I did not notice that many disk brake TT bikes in use. Would this not have been ideal conditions to show how much better they are?

Think he fell.

I don't think it was him vs Nairo at all , he was playing the role of El Kapitan in the team, and the diminutive Columbian sure could have done with this help / advice / leadership at the Giro so that is the real loss imo. He might have take a stage or two as well.

I see Richie has been winging about being bullied at the Dauphiné by what he  thought was his pals - all is fair in love and war boet!  Also I think Chris was playing a mind game or two, and that where I think Richies weakness is, his headspace.

Talking Dauphiné, I have a feeling the Bird Song man might feature in this Tour. I hope so.
