Yes all the scaffolding bridges are just for the event. They do build some permanent bridges that are left as part of uplifting the spruit but I don't know of any new permanent bridges this year. I think this year was much easier for them because everything was in the same place, so they could just replicate it, still a massive undertaking though.

Was it just me or was there alot more water in the stormwater system than last year. Cant remember being so wet and cold last year! Still great fun!!

Water flow in the storm water drains was a lot stronger this year... not sure why, but at setup in the tunnels we all noticed it. The storm water drains were also a lot cleaner in my view - tough job, but they're doing pretty well I reckon.

To answer another question, some of the purpose built ramps do stay on as legacy builds, but the scaffolding obviously comes down and the yellow grids do for the large part also get removed - they would wash away in heavy rains otherwise

Hope I get to ride next year... felt robbed the last two years

Enjoyed the event, thought there was more grip but still managed to end up on the floor just after the Anatomic tunnel.

Beer tent was disappointing, well there was no tent and only cans on sale for R25 each or cups of Coke for R15.

Great job Nathrix!

Hope you guys all enjoyed our Anatomic water point

Anatomic wp looked good, no time to stop though while chasing Jules and co who were miles ahead

I'm busy with an "extended video" to try and show quite a bit more of the Hollard Juma route as i took a hell of allot of footage and also allot of drone footage from the Sheriff who was on drone duty :nuke: , will post as soon as I'm done with the edit and the upload.

Lekker race, wet and cold but lekker! That Anatomic tunnel scared the hell out of me! Guy in front of me went down 5 times - we were in B batch so he wasn't even a rookie, really hope he's okay tonight.

That 2km after Anatomic was very slippery with all the leaves. Guy behind me came down just as we exitted the tunnel, then about 500m on I slipped and fell (sore skin burns...), then just after that two more guys in front of me came down. I wander how many people fell in that section. Great ride though - was me second.

Glad I missed it then

Myself and a mate rode, whilst our wives waited. They said it was worse than last year, with no seating, poor big screen and less food/coffee options vs last year. I thought the beer tasted great, and the grass on the field was comfy :)

That's a pity... they should know by now we love a post ride brewski or 2

It's a lekker concept and I enjoyed the ride (aside from the two times my bike just completely slipped out from under me with not even a split-second to react). That said, I don't think they got as many entries as they had hoped for (they were really pumping the last minute marketing and left entries open also till very late) and what really struck me during the ride is just how massive an operation this is, which must have pretty huge costs that need to be covered. I have no idea how much Hollard puts into it but my suspicion is that this year's event might have run at a loss. That coupled with them probably still trying to bounce back financially from the year that everything washed away in the floods, I'm not sure we'll be seeing many more of these.

It's a pity because it really is a unique experience and really opens your eyes to what's going on in Joburg, but I just cant think how they can really make it worth their while for all that effort. Entry fees are already on the higher end of MTB events so they can't really push the price up by much and then they also cant increase numbers too much because A) there were already some bottlenecks on yesterday's undersold event, and B) it's actually quite a technical ride and not really a mass participation bring-the-whole-family kinda ride.

But hopefully I'm wrong and somehow they can make it a permanent fixture on the MTB calendar for years to come.

I also think this is a great concept . Strange though that the organizers choose not to sanction an event that is not really a " bring the whole family ride"and that's quite technical , as that excludes anyone that has a racing license from entering the event ? So you have an event that is aimed mostly at people with above average Mtb skills , and then have it so the top racing snakes from juniors up cannot partake ???

This race gets better each year. I crashed plenty times. Fortunately nothing serious. There is an art to riding the tunnel. I crashed once in there, and then a bit later heard the guys behind me hit the deck.

I walk most of the low tunnels after being concussed last year hitting a pipe in the roof of a tunnel

A question from a roadie - are all of those ramps, both with scaffolding and otherwise, put up specifically for this event? Presumably there aren't left up for the year?

Looks like a serious bit of work getting the route built...

Yes ... they spend 1.5 million rand on the route

I found the dropper post very useful in the low tunnels. Some of them were still too low to ride though (XL bike).

As much fun as the route was, I probably won't do it again. Too many people so I spent a lot of time standing around. And the low tunnels got a bit annoying after the first one or two.
