Thank you for your report, I enjoyed reading it.

I ran Irene yesterday and afterward I watch Ironman. You guys are truly inspirational. Congratulations to you all!!

I guess if I get tired of Comrades I could always put IM on my bucket list... Thank you IceCreamMan for planting the seed

Got to admit, watching the Epic I have zero interest in competing myself. But Gees, I really felt the pull yesterday.

Nice write up ICM and empathise with what you go through.  Well done on finishing with severe cramps.

Am here suffering in silence, stiff and hobbling yet with the proud sense of achievement that we have.... the high sort of takes away the pain.

Enjoy the beach and beers!!

This was definitely the medal I've worked the hardest for in my life... but to be honest it belongs to the PE crowd and volunteers. If it were not for the supporters I doubt I would have finished. Thank you for coming out and supporting us!

What a day once again. Such a fantastic event, all made by the amazing supporters. Thx PE, you rock as always. Finished in 12h33, which I'm very happy with. PB by about 20 minutes. Now for some red wine and rest. :D

Congrats guys on your great times....

I had another loooong day out. Nothing went according to plan... but that is IRONMAN!

If it was suppose to be easy then everybody would be doing it!

Swim was okay and bike was really good till the 150Kms mark where I started feeling very nauseous and could not eat or drink anything....

Started the run very slowly and at the 10Km mark started vomiting. Felt a little bit better after that and could almost pick up the pace again and started taking in fluids again but every now and then it would all just come out again...  with 4kms to go i had my last puking session when my wife passed me  .... I told her to please go on and that i will be ok.

She dipped in @ 14:56 for her first Ironman and I finally struggled home in 15:03!

I am super proud of her!!

My son did however ask me: "Daddy... Did mommy really beat you?"

This was my first Ironman and only second triathlon. Having done the Bela Bela 5150 last year. The swim was difficult with the choppy conditions. Ended on 1hr45. Bike was good. Did the first lap in 2h55 but decided I was going too fast so held back on second lap. Came in at 6hr27 having had nice stop at half way.

My run was a shocker. Only did a 21km before IM and only ever ran 5k off the bike. The run at the 5150 was a walk. Got blisters at the 35k mark. So cruised in at 6h48 for the 42k. But the euphoria of crossing the finish line at 15h17 made up for all the training time and pain. What a feeling!

Will I do it again. Hell yes!!!

At this stage the heart says yes, but the quads, knees, feet, back and neck votes no.... :D

So, my 2c worth.

1. I had a good swim - 1h07.

2. Ride started well, was on track for a 5h40 when my lower back started tightening. Months of training without pain and then boom - race day - it falls to pieces. From 120km I was really hurting. Then got pinned for drafting (long story short, I wasn't but suspect it's still my fault for not properly understanding the rules - I got overtaken so I pulled out sideways to give the 2m box instead of dropping back 12m to re-establish the gap). Marshal pulled up at behind me thinking i was attempting to overtake, and couldn't complete it! Anyway, pulled into the penalty tent and there were so many riders stopped, that they'd run out of stopwatches! One of the refs in the tent said he'd had two riders the whole of the 2016 event. There were at least 8 of us there at that one moment! I don't know if the marshals had been told to pin as many as possible because of worlds next year in PE; but it seemed to me like they were on a mission. Anyway, got off the bike in 5h52.

3. The run was a dog show. By then my back and hamstrings had seized completely, so it turned into a run/walk during which I just tried to keep putting one foot in front of the other. Had hoped for a 4h10. Ended with a 4h45.

Which gave me a 12h02! (Maybe i should appeal the penalty!)

Anyway, despite the setbacks, it was a great day for a first IMSA. Near perfect conditions, crowd support was amazing and the beer in the bath afterwards may have been the greatest thing I've ever tasted. Even though i puked it up immediately afterwards!!!

See you in 2018 PE.

Completed my first triathlon on Sunday, it just happened to be the Full Ironman and it was firken BRUTAL. No jokes, that is some serious stuff! Kudo’s to everyone who finished.

I really did not know what to expect form the Ironman but aimed for a time between 12 and 13 hours. I revised my target to 13 and a half hours after my earlier post regarding training. Anyway I was really worried about my run as my normal training consist of an 5km sprints with an occasional 10km to change thing up. Prior to the Ironman I did a 28km and a 30km run that both went very badly ( understatement).

Raceday.

Swim. It was my first openwater swim in the ocean and I loved it! The rolling start is great! I felt like I got held up in the pushing tide just of Shark Rock Pier. Finished the swim in 1h16.

Cycle. It was a funny old course with the wind constantly shifting direction. My aim was to do a 5h30 cycle but limped home in 6h06. Being a mountain biker on a 9 speed hired in road bike, I was a sitting duck for the guys on tri bike. First big underestimation of the day is the bike ride. 180,2km is a long, long way if you are not allowed to draft ( not that mountain bikers or rather real cyclist draft a lot anyway ). Started cramping with 5km to go.

Run. BRUTAL is actually an understatement. The heat radiating of the asphalt was almost unbearable and I just could not get my legs to work. Within the first 2km I got some really good advice from Todd, my new American buddy. He told me to listen to my body and just move forward. I revised my pace to 7min and 30 seconds per km and kept it constant throughout. The crowd support from the Broadwalk to Admiralty Way is INSANE. They absolutely carry you through the marathon and it is a fact that without their amazing support I would not have finished.

I crossed the finish line in 12h59. My body is battered and bruised but my soul is enriched. It is an amazing event fill with awesome athletes, friendly volunteers and crazy support.

Its always the converse in life-great conditions but a shocker for me:

Swim was fine the usual 1h14 sort of thing. Conditions were good

Bike -started puking at 80km didnt know from what-continued to loose half a lung till about 160km when either my body had nothing left or I was like a horse bolting for home. The wind was gusting in some spots but not what we were used to in previous years.

Then on the run was okay and felt okayish but at 26km by body had enough and the lack of food that I couldnt keep down just got to me, so walked the last 15km-Dazed and Confused.

Limped home in 13h59-2 Hours over what I planned, but that is enough of my little sad tale of woe.

Still the most beautifull Bike leg and the crowd support is fantastic. One thing I saw in some IM events in the US, is supporters appreciation bracelets. Athletes give them to supporters along the route on the run. This is for supporters who athletes feel are the best on the day and the supporters try to collect as many as possible. Just imagine what that will do to the PE crowd-they will go bedonderd. So not that they need any more encouragement but that will be fun.

Well done everyone - what an event to be a part of!

Super stoked with how my day went.

1hr08 swim - took a while to get into a rhythm with the chop and I also battled to see the yellow marker buoys, especially on the leg coming back, the glare made it quite difficult. Could have been my normal goggles, not sure if triathlon ones are polarized or something like that? According to my watch actually swam 4100m.

6hr02 bike - made the crucial error of changing something on race day. Mixed my usual carb drink to have on my bike but instead of mixing the two scoops to 750ml like I had done for most of my long bike rides, I followed the mixing suggestions on the carb drink bottle which was 3 and a half scoops for 750ml. It didn't sit well with my tummy and I was nauseas and had no legs for the first 90km lap. Had to fight some real mental demons in the early part of the bike. Being 2 hours in and feeling that ***, not knowing whether things will get better or not, it was really difficult to just keep on plodding along. Especially when you have a goal in mind and you're going way slower than normal! Overcame that thank goodness and smashed the second loop, probably went way too hard trying to get back to my 6hr ride goal.

4h50 run - slower than I had hoped but cramps just got the better of me. Had a few times where everything just seized completely and all I could do was wait for the muscles to unlock. I used the two turn around points as my walk zones, some-times I would walk up the hill and run down, sometimes run up and walk down. The crowd support in the middle section of the run was unbelievable and I think I managed to run that section every loop.

I don't think I would have finished without the supporters - what an atmosphere and what an event!
