Really sad! Thoughts and prayers with Daniele and his family.

I'm new to cycling (few months) and for some reason chose road over MTB. I've really been enjoying it but I've had few close calls. Last weekend I was hit twice within the span of 5 minutes (Incident 1: SUV cut me off and braked right in front me bumping me into a parked car. Incident 2: Just down the road lady decides she's getting out of the car at a pedestrian crossing, I go straight into her door) No serious injuries but it makes one hesitant.

People just don't look! I'm the "nerdy" cyclist with all the lights and bright reflective clothing but I've found these things have little impact. The driving culture in this country is off. There is a sense of entitlement amongst drivers (and a few cyclists) and that is what needs to change.

Not sure not it will though

Stay safe!

Be safe .

Remember when you are out cycling :

I AM INVISIBLE

Really sad news, strongs to Danielle and his family during this challenging time. This crap is really happening way too often. A buddy was also knocked off his bike a few weeks back whilst commuting. Fortunately just cosmetic damage to his bike (R38k worth!) but could walk away with just a bruise here and there. The driver just cut in front of him whilst he was doing around 30km/h, stopped to check if he's ok but didn't even apologize. Yesterday whilst cramping so bad I had to stop close to the end of the Durby dash, i just heard a noise and it was a cop who knocked over 2 cyclists. It looked as if he dodged an oncoming truck so the 2 innocent cyclists had to bear the brunt of his impatience. Fortunately they seemed fine but his mirror was lying in the middle of the road so it must have been a bit eina for them i reckon. Point is this, us as cyclists are literally living on a wing and a prayer whilst we are on the road. With people texting and driving most of the time and literally not giving a Damn about us despite our failed attempts at being noticed, a serious intervention is required to reduce this carnage on the roads. Speed sensitive cell phones that don't allow the user to see what's happening on it whilst driving perhaps? Sounds crazy/stupid perhaps but I reckon something as small as this might just be the solution to keep the drivers attention on the road and not elsewhere!!!

Get well soon Daniele.

Don't want to hijack the thread, but, that actually sounds like a damn good idea.

I think this problem is going to get worse as the generations that have basically been born with a cellphone in their hands grow up and take to the roads.

Not sure how it could be done practically. I mean, does nobody in a vehicle over a certain speed get to use their phones?

Would you have an option to say you're not the driver? People would just always select that option because of the whole, "It'll never happen to me" mentality.

Anyone close to Daniele : I am an attorney but don't do 3 rd party claims but I can help him by referring him to a specialist colleague .

He must be aware of people unknown to him approaching him/his wife and make him sign forms after promising him the world .

Thanks so much to everyone who had Daniele in their thoughts and prayers. He is feeling better every day and should hopefully be home soon. Now begins a very very long road to recovery and a long time off the bike but he is glad just to be alive at this stage.

Once again thanks to all the Hub world for the positive thoughts.

Great news.!

Having been on a road to recovery myself, I know that it can be long and lonely.

Hang in there and stay positive.

It always feels to read good news after a terrible accident. Take it easy bud and heal quickly.

It is truly shocking to think of what happened to Daniele. I did a Hub deal with him a little while ago and the manner in which he did everything was so refreshing. A  real peoples person. It is also great to see him recovering so well.

I was also knocked from my bike about 14 months ago near the Waterfront, requiring a plate in my shoulder, so I identify with him.

Recently also had a few close calls from motorists not giving us any space and turning in front of me.

We need to keep being alert.

Best wished for a speedy recovery, Daniele!
