Option 1 or 2? Maxxis vs Schwalbe

Read everything on here regarding tyre choices for MTB wondering what everyone thinks...

Needing new tyres for my Giant Trance. Will be riding table mountain, one day Tokai, Enduro events.

(Using onza Ibex/Canis for XC and general riding working well)

Need a stronger rear tyre as the Canis is XC casing and Im thinking one day I will slice it open or puncture. (Running tubeless)

Option 1:

Schwalbe Magic Mary Evo Snakeskin 2.35 Front and Rock Razor Evo Snakeskin 2.35 Rear

1,530 +/- weight semi slick rear. Just worried that the bike will slip out when climbing rocky sections of trail?

Option 2:

Maxxis High Roller 2 TR 2.30 Front and Ardent 2.25 Rear

1635 weight +/-

I have looked at lots of combinations and landed on the two above for better rolling resistance while still being great in corners and good on the long climbs. Will be keeping the Onza tyres for XC.

Firstly... Rock razor won't slip out. Don't worry about that. Only area it lacks in is straight line braking. And even then not so much.

As for the answer - are you running the standard PXC rims? If so, the maxxis would be the better choice as they are slimmer than the schwalbe, but go for the slightly wider ardent as you'll be better off with the larger volume and the 2.25 is rather narrow. The reason I say this is the slightly narrower tyres will have a better profile on the rim than the schwalbe, which are more like a maxxis 2.5 in width. Thus the tyre will be less pinched and less prone to roll.

If your rims are 25mm or wider, then either will work well. But the schwalbe combo would be my choice.

Ardent 2.25 not an impressive rear tyre. Braking, rolling and especially cornering not nearly as good as the Spez GC I replaced mine with. Not saying you must get a GC, just that you can do a lot better than Ardent at the rear

I run a magic Mary up front and a nobby nic at the back. When the nobby nic is klaar I'm going to fit a rock razor. If you decide on option 1 please give some feedback.

I have the MM/RR combo that i have been running for a few rides now and its so awsome.

Superb grip and good rolling resistance. I ride mainly at Thaba that has a varied terrain including lots of rocks and they perform superbly.

They just dig in and i can actually hear the tyres digging in and grabbing hold.

Yea they are the stock PXC rims. I was leaning towards the MM/RR from your replies to previous threads but if they wont work as well with stock rims I will have to go with Maxxis. Thanks for the advice

If i go highroller 11 front would the ardent be the best for grip/rolling resistance in it's category without having to go for something heavier and slower.

They'll work, they'll just have less support for the sidewalls on the narrow rims cos the bead will be slightly more pinched relative to its width.

I changed from WTB to Schwalbe MM/RR and they kick A.

That's it. Now go give them your money.

If you go with the Maxxis option, get the Aggressor for the rear instead of the Ardent.

I've been running the Aggressor for a couple of weeks now, super happy with it.

Rather opt for the Aggressor as opposed to the Ardent. Also look at the Minion SS for a semi-slick option.

The High Roller II is a fantastic performer in dry and intermediate conditions.

Spez Butcher Control front and Slaughter Grid rear, might also be a great option. The Slaughter is similar to the Rock Razor.

The Spez tires are also great value for money. I saw them at R650 each.

I have an Aggressor at the front (2.3) and I must say it grips excellently in corners
