If you're going to spend money move straight onto 10 speed. Don't bother with 9 speed. Especially on a long travel 1x bike you intend climbing with. Having said that I have some old 9 speed stuff laying around you can have. Shifter and derailleur. You'll need a 9 speed cassette though.Get one of your folks to contact me for collection.

What's 9 speed?

If you're looking at upgrading, rather go to 10 speed as it is becoming increasingly difficult to get spares for 9 speed drive trains. Spares for 10 speed are still readily available!

You can get some fantastic deals on 10 speed equipment as everyone is upgrading to 11 and even 12 in certain instances.

Nothing wrong with 9 speed...

I saw a comment about climbing with 9 speed? HUH?

Before about a year or two ago there were no 42t rings on a cassette.

We all ran 11 - 34 or 11 -36 and climbed just fine... in fact my brother still runs a 1 x 9 11-34 and it also climbs fine... weird.. like suddenly cos there are 11 speed and 12 speed groupsets 9 speed doesn't work anymore...

Glad you posted this as I still run 9 speed and it works great. In fact I just ordered a 9 speed grip shifter from CRC as my family is flying out for xmas so free delivery.

Let me offer some insight. Mongooser is on a downhill bike. He has to go 1x anyways.

There is no option for a fd. Which is why I asked if he wants to climb it. If he wasn't going to climb it at all. Then sure, an 11-32/34 nine speed setup will be fine.

I still use 9 speed myself. Nothing wrong with it. Its not hens teeth like everyone says. You could still buy it from shops for cheap. But he should't be spending money on it. Not when he's a kid who doesn't earn a living like the rest of us. Not when the benefits of 9 over 8 speed are not worth spending money on. And especially not when people here offer it for free.

If he is going to spend money he saved up. If he wants to climb a bike with all that weight and travel. As young and fit as he may be. It makes more sense to go for the wider range 10 speed offers when using a 1x drivetrain.
