Did the Cobra and nearly pooped myself

I just missed riding over a cobra's tail on the Contermanskloof green singletrack this afternoon. He was slithering off the trail and I saw him when my front wheel was about a meter away from him.

I don't mind admitting I might need a new chamois.

Adrenaline boosted - I did a whole bunch of PR's this afternoon.

I had the poison center number in my phone but I've put it on speed dial now. Sitting and having a coffee afterwards and wondered how many of the riders headed out on the trail had the number in their phones.

The snake bite number off the notice board in the shed?

I don't know who that calls.. if you are worried about snake bites - carry a long pressure bandage and use it a quickly as possible and get help to get out asap take the snake with you if possible - assuming it's dead.

Here is the number to have on the Tygerberg trails - Tygerberg Hospital: Poison Unit 021 931 6129

If it works like it did when I was a student at that hospital they will just give you advice on what to do..

Read the link I placed above, carry a bandage and get yourself extracted asap -

So summertime snakebite emergency plan is now -

1. Add a length of elasticated bandage to Camelbak

2. My SOS app makes a return after having been retired when I started using Garmin Livetrack

3. Discovery emergency number - Netcare - Tygerberg poison unit - Snakebite assist number all on speed dial.

4. Say prayers - keep fingers crossed and eyes peeled.

And try and educate yourself so that you can identify the snake and are able to tell emergency services which snake it was.

I would take a bet that the odds of being bitten by a snake whilst cycling is almost zero.

The odds of getting bitten whilst hiking is already low, now add a bike and speed.

Most snake bites occur in rural areas where people walk barefooted, at dusk or when people try to catch/harass/kill snakes.
