Freak accident in Cradle

If it was the aftermath that I saw, the accident took place on the downhill back from the caves, just before the Kromdrai junction - where the weeping willows overhang the road.

There was lots of ambulance-police car activity there at around 0900.....

Always lots of monkeys there.

Another hazzard in that area, are the two worsies that come yapping after you on the down hill.

I hope the riders heal up fast.

Where we go on holiday in December in KZN, we always get a lot of monkeys running over the road. There are some really fast descends where I easily clock 70km/h+, but it never crossed my mind that they might actually run in front of you. Will be very cautious this year.

I'm not gonna mention this to my wife, she is looking for a reason to leave the bikes at home.

Thanks bud. Been told to just keep arm in sling but cycling buddies tell that can lead to a weak spot prone to breaking again and a plate is better.

Trawled through hub thinking that would have been discussed before but caanot find a thread so guess will have to go see specialist

Broke my Clavicle in June (which cyclist hasnt?) The Specialist told me to let it fuse naturally. I trusted him as last year December he did some good work on my hand. The specialist in question is Dr Walter Stuart in Bordaeux, Craighall area. He headed up the Wits Ortho Unit and also spend time in UK. So his advice was that he can have a plate put in or fuse, after having anesthesia the last time it took me a while to get my fitness back so opted to let it fuse naturally.

The process is sore-I slept for 6 weeks on one side. It has now fused and I dont feel it when I run or Bike but it does cause irritation in the swim and I dont have a cool scar-but a bump in the area.

I would get a second opnion because some guys want to cut and get $$$ and some are more prudent and want what they think is best.

Heal up and hope you get back on the bike soon

Am not in the medical field. Is a plate something you can simply ask for and they'll do it?

I think it is standard practise for most doctors, only heard of the occasional Dr's that left the fracture to heal normally.

The decision is yours to have it removed or not.

Doing the Kremetart one year, the bunch I was in almost got wiped out by a babboon running over the road in front of us going down the northern side of the Soutpansberg.

also depends on how bad the break is and if it is protruding through the skin or not.

This was mine - no way that it could have healed on its own.

Was apparently decapitated in the process

The monkey appeared deceased, but intact - at least when I went past. Cannot comment for what took place afterwards......

Speedy recovery to the riders involved.

We used to get a figure of eight around the back of the shoulders, pulling both shoulders back to reset it. Think is was about 6 weeks.

Happy to report that rider is bruised, lost some skin and popped and eardrum but fine otherwise.

He was lying next to me in the clinic (broke collarbone)

Pleased to see this, couldn't stop thinking about it. Hope you both have a speedy recovery.

Definitely plate it. Had mine done last year, plate taken out this year. Recovery is so much better with a plate.

The bone actually heals a lot slower when it is plated. After I popped mine, I asked the specialist and he stated 12 to 18 months before it is healed enough foe the plate to be removed. I had n option other than a plate as my collar bone shattered in a gazillion pieces in the middle. Hubber friend of mine had his slinged and had to go back for a plate as it would not join. Rest up and keep it calm. Whatever you decided, do after care on that shoulder as soon as the doc allows you
