A Hardtail for Hard Times

Hi everyone and thanks for making this site so helpful.

I'm looking to spend around 10-12k on a hardtail. I have my eye on a new GT Zaskar Sport 2017. Can anyone share their thoughts on this model or its components?

It does seem like a great value for money bike (considering it's new). What do you think? I'm a novice who will mainly use it on the tracks around table mountain and for commuting occasionally. I'm not planning on racing or doing anything majorly technical. But I do want something that offers a solid base to build on or to resell in time.

Some people have warned me to stay away from GT and that they have a poor resale value. And I've had others say the exact same thing about Silverback (and the opposite about GT). It's hard to find an objective opinion. Most people seem to have higher budgets and are quick to shoot down brands or ranges pitched at a lower price point.

I guess I just want to feel confident I'm not being a total idiot in going this direction. But by all means, tell me if+why I am..

The 2nd hand option really does seem more reasonable but I wouldn't know where to start and how to evaluate a bike competently. For example, there is a Silverback Sola 2 (i think 2014) going for 8.9k. Is it worth the risk or would you rather go for a new bike?

Thanks for your help,

Have no first hand experience with this model but I've looked on the link you've shared. Spec looks very decent and there is nothing wrong with the GT brand IMO. Looks like a great buy.

you can get a better spec bike for 10-12 k than that GT so unless it costs 8 or less you need to keep looking

nothing wrong with silverback or momsen , merida or giant either

compare fork drivetrain brakesets and wheels they are what matters not brands

For someone coming into the sport I don't think you can appreciate super brakes or a drive train and you will probs be scared off it gets rough (saddle area) so my advice is try to get a decent fork and wheels (your major contact points) and also 2.2 or 2.3 tyres if you can.

You said you are not going straight into the racing scene so make sure you are comfortable on the bike

***************Don't buy a saddle the size of Robbin island , a small saddle that is the right fit is way more comfortable

GT's are great bikes.

Dont even think of re-sale value on bicycles, its not like a car or motorbike. You'll never make money back on a bike when selling. The money you make back is merely a contribution to your next bike.

If I were you I'd look 2nd hand for a good deal, make sure you get decent wheels and a saddle.

Components are wear and tear items, yo'll likely be replacing something so dont just not consider a bike because the guy had done 1000km on a cassette.

Maybe take someone who knows a bit more with you to look.

Good luck and enjoy!!

What do you guys think about this bike: GT Zaskar Elite 2014?

I'm hoping to get one 2nd hand for around 12k

that's a bit more like it for that money

have someone(qualified) check out the fork ,wheelsand components etc before you buy

a (good) local bike shop will usually give you an honest opinion for free and a confident seller wont mind if you get it checked out

I have that exact bike, bought it new, it has been brilliant - what I paid vs what I got, serious bang for buck

Hi, all depends on what you are looking for a 26' or 29'er

https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/220280-momsen-sl-629-carbon-medium/

Great starting point, although it is out of budget.

Or

Also a good starting point, bit more in budget.

That Momsen is very sexy. Don't see that look getting tired any time soon. The Giant is a large and I prefer a medium.

Awesome, I just sealed the deal for 11k on the 2014 Zaskar Elite. It's had the tubeless conversion done. Looks kind of messy. Wondering whether that is the right route. Perhaps that belongs in another thread. Going to take it in for a service and hopefully won't find any major issues.
