MTB upgrade

Guys I have a slight upgrade problem.

Currently I'm running a 2x10 xt setup with a 26-36 chainring combo in the front. Those rings are pretty badly worn so I need to replace them.

What I was think was getting a 32t oval for the front and upgrading to 1x11. Unfortunately some problems happened which severely depleted my rainy day account.

So what I want to do is get the chainring for now, and maybe buy the SRAM 11-42 chain/cassette combo and then later on get the shifter + rear derailleur. Or would it be better to rather buy the complete upgrade kit. Keeping in mind that I've currently got a SRAM cassette with the xt derailleur.

Any advice would be appreciated as I'm not sure how the 1x10 11-36 will ride with the 32t oval.

Okay, firstly you mustn't buy the 11sp SRAM cassette as you'd need a new freehub body - all their cassettes (11sp & 12sp) except NX level are based on their XD Driver system, which your current hub isn't fitted with.

Unless, it's the NX combo, in which case you can go for it.

and the 1x10 11-36 will ride fine with the oval

HOWEVER!!!

You could also keep your shifter & derailleur and just get the Sunrace 10sp 11-42 from Rapide, HERE. Far cheaper, same end result, same range.

No reason to upgrade to 11sp just for the sake of it, and if your budget is tight, that's what I'd recommend.

You could also get the oval narrow wide from them, and have the entire setup for less than 2k. HERE

What Myles ^ said.

The biggest advantage of going 1x11 from a 1x10 setup: fresh equipment and drivetrain. That extra bailout gear is just like a nicety.

I used a NW ring on my 10-speed setup for 15 months before switching to 11-speed. Still use the same ring though it's not recommended for chain wear...

Cool bud, thanks so much.

Do you have any experience with the sunrace cassette? How are the jumps between gears?

Also how does the rapide oval ring compare with the AB oval or Rotor oval rings?

Sorry for the questions, just don't know the brand at all

My son uses the Sunrace cassette, it is very good. I think Rapide, Rotor, AB are much of a muchness. all pretty good. Buy the cheapest.

My oval chainrings don't wear out, the teeth get chipped and then after a while I want to replace them.

I recently put on the Rapide 32t oval

and from Rapide from Wayne the Sunrace 10spd 11-42 cassette

I can recommend Wayne highly for service and friendliness

better shifting on the Sunrace than the xt ghetto cassette i had on the back (11-42) and the oval works great as it helps a slight bit in getting up those short very steep climbs

I run a 1x10 with sunrace 11-42 and a blackspire 32t oval

its a great smooth setup with no gaps for climbing and if anything it just spins out on the flat too soon

if anything im thinking of a 34t oval to see if it balances out the ups and downs/flats a bit better

Ahmen

I bought a 10 speed sunrace cassette for one of the kids.

And I can tell you there is absolutely bugger-all wrong with it. Sweet as a Shimano XT cassette.
