safety or the lack thereof

the roads aren't safe apparently just read this forum for why

and the perception with mtb is that if you don't get ridden over by a macho weekend warrior you will get mugged

would you want your daughter to go off cycling ?

just saying :whistling:

Are the men's numbers also not decreasing?

Good point, this year was the 1st time I can remember that there were late entries available for the 94.7 (Road and MTB)

I am not sure on which forum to post this.

I had a look at the number of female cyclists participating at the 94.7 and Argus for the last 4 years (according to Racetec):

94.7

  • 2016: 3741
  • 2015: 4186
  • 2014: 4625
  • 2013: 4190

Argus

  • 2016: 5296
  • 2015: 6435 (47km, so this should be excluded)
  • 2014: 5909
  • 2013: 6229

It seems the number of female cyclists is declining and my question is why?

Are the wives looking after children on weekends while hubby is cycling?

It would be interesting to have your thoughts and also how to go about promoting cycling to women.

Before we assume that this is a gender trend, how do these numbers correlate to male numbers?

I reckon it's a financial issue, costs are so high, not just bikes and spares but traveling costs too .. or the fact that trail running has become so popular...

PS is trail running still a thing?

OR

People are over these big events and would rather do smaller events?

Who knows?!

Apparently black is the new black, so perhaps golf is the new golf...

Every night when I go to bed, I kneel next to my bed and wish upon a star that all the golfers would just stay on the golf course.

Well in Gauteng maybe - here in the enlightened and marginally less crime ridden Cape, its quite possible to enjoy MTB safely. Well at least the mugging part. Nobody ever got killed by a weekend warrior either though. Must be rough up there.

in 90s all the dads where in a gun store and all the kids where riding bikes

now all the dads are riding bikes and all the kids are at home playing call of duty with guns

its hard to keep track

what happened with kite surfing ......?

I'll just leave this out there. The recent Namaqua Quest 3 day stage race (sold out) had more female entrants than male entrants. Split was something like 55%/45%.
