Good day all

So, I was a runner. Then got diagnosed to have a hip replacement. Still too scared to have it done but the orthopaedic surgeon reckons cycling is good so I bought a mountain bike. Now, I'm riding this thing but mostly on roads. and I am thinking maybe I got the wrong kind of bike? Then again, it has a more upright posture which I seem to be more comfortable with. It strikes me though that these fat knobblies arent ideal for riding on tar. But I also dont want a one trick bike. So what tyres can you recommend for road on a MTB and the occasional excursion onto tracks?

The big knobs are meant for offroad and you will be encountering more resistance on the road.  I would have recommended slicks but if you do plan on going offroad occasionally, look at trail tyres.  Ask at your LBS, they will be able to assist.

I suggest going with maxxis crossmark, You can make them tubeless and I dont think they have a lot of high rolling resistance. Just amp up the pressure when riding on the road.

A bit of an alternative viewpoint (from a fellow runner ;) ) - why don't you just keep the OE tyres on until it is worn down?  (Good grip / perhaps less puncture prone, etc)

I have ridden some races (incl 94.7) with my orig knobblies (Maxxis Sphinx), and although it wears a bit, I still prefer it to e.g. slicks.  (I am not in it for the time BTW :) )

This.

Cant go wrong with the crossmark as a "Do it all" tyre. I use them on my commuter which see's about 90 road 10 dirt and they last a long time.

If you ride mostly on tar every MTB tyre will have its knobblies disappear pretty soon.

Therefore from an economical point of view just stick to what you have right now and don't worry about a replacement.

If they get to a point where you can't fix them anymore - buy some tyres that are on sale... :-)

Seems like the black Friday CWC cycles sale is still on....well it's still showing on their site anyway...

R380 per tyre for a Crossmark is the cheapest you are going to get them for. ACT NOW!!!  :w00t:

Just remember that for free shipping you need to spend over R1000...

EDIT....ok just checked again and it seems the crosmarks are back to the nomral price....they still have other tyres on sale though!

Continental Race King Puregrip .

I concur - the tread pattern will reduce the wear time while you're on the road and still give you plenty traction in the dirt/jeep track.

Not cheap though so agree, wear the current ones down first. Will also make you stronger, quicker
