Front shock system on a non competitive bike

I picked up a 26" Silverback for the Missus as a first time MTB.  We have done a lot of nature reserve biking on borrowed bike and she will probably  get into.

Now, the bike is in good condition except that the stantions are rusted.

What are my options here? ( The bike has cable disks)

 El cheapo replacement?

Something a little better

Repair ( replace) just the stantions

Why do these never seem to come up in the classifide section.

Happy to learn and engage.

Rusty stanchions tell me it's most likely a cheap and cheerful fork, so you're unlikely to get replacement parts for it. Upgrade away, just make sure you match the steerer tube size. If it's straight steerer your options will be limited, but they do pop up in the classifieds from time to time.

Errrm, Straight steerer???

It refers to the shape of the steerer (tube) that goes into the frame.  See pic below

You will need to take the fork out of the frame to check, then you will know what type of fork to buy.  The current fork needs to be replaces and you might want to consider upgrading the brakes from mechanical to hydraulic.

Edit: which model Silverback bike is it?

Take some steel wool and polish the rust off gently. It will make the forks work a little better. Its probably a cheap fork with springs and elastomers so no oil to leak out. If it is an air sprung fork then dont bother as any rust or big scratches and it will leak anyway

keep an eye out for a straight steerer Reba, Recon or Fox F100 on the classifieds. Good used ones come up occasionally. Friend got a nice Reba last year.

2nd hand ones do pop up. Besides the tapered or straight challenge also check to see the length of the tube. Some guys cut those things bloody short so the stem is slammed in a small frame so the tube can sometimes be too short.

An older 26" Silverback (Phoenix, Sierra, etc) will almost certainly have a 100mm travel straight steerer fork.  Just measure the length of the steerer tube and watch the classifieds.
