123km results look a bit dodge.

the ladies race was shortened to 3 laps (87km) instead of 5 (124km).

Could be that their group was preloaded under the 124km distance.

The results are always provisional when released straight after a race and usually corrected later in the week.

I must say, other than the mess with start times, the event was well organized, and a good route. Needed a climb or 2. Well done to those involved on the day.

Reinhardt Janse van Rensberg on his last lap, with a 10 minute lead at this point. It takes about 3.5 minutes for cover the section of tar you can see in the photo.

A well organised race, thanks to the organisers:

Two suggestions:

- please improve on the pre-race communication - a lot

- to the Vets 50+ comms.  There were pre-race talk that the white line must not be crossed.  Was even part of the start line debrief.  The normal threats of a DQ. This was ignored from the gun by most.  It actually felt like we had a rolling road closure scenario for the entire race. Either give us rolling road closure or make good on enforcing the rules.

See you next year.

Although there was a lot of complaining about the start times not being up etc. I want to thank the organizers for a much better event than in past years.

The full road closure on the TT was fantastic. The little guys had full road closure on their races which made parents feel a lot safer letting their children compete

Not once did I feel unsafe on the road race and the final 10km road closure was also great.

Lots of food stalls were arranged, and they tried to have prize giving as quickly as possible after the event

I think well done to the organizers, we don't all know what goes on behind the scenes

A full 2 Elite ladies pitching up for the road race.

I wonder how many will pitch up for Fast One?

To the organisers.  Go have a look why is this and try to figure out what the recipe is.

It is not that hard.

Well said - I have sent this to the team that did the bulk of the organising (who took the good with the bad), along with Underachiever's two suggestions.

It may have been better organised this year, but they seriously need to take a look at the way they manage this event.

There were a grand total of 20 elite men in the road race, 10 elite men in the TT and only 2 elite ladies! That's a joke if ever I heard one...

My wife was driving the car behind Reiny (the silver Opel) ...she says she couldn't believe the way he destroyed the field. Her one rider said that he didn't even attack, he simply pushed harder on the pedals and upped the pace...

I guess that is the difference between riding as a job VS riding as a sport/past time.

Not directed at you, but a general reply to anyone that feels the same but hasn't said it openly.

No doubt the communication could improve - not only for the provincial events but from the province as a whole. Unless events are advertised on one of a few online entry portals, the information is hard to find - let alone all the other non-race specific information. Considering Gauteng has one of the highest number of cyclists, the income generated from the membership fees (R50-R75 per person) plus the portion of the rider levy charged at every race should be enough to spend on a website (creation plus maintenance). There are other sources of income, which I only found out about yesterday, but that's not going to solve the problems of communication.

The link to the Mpumalanga road race is not working - would be interesting to see which pros were there that usually ride in local races.

The riders deciding to stay away as a result of the poor communication leading up to the event are also part of the problem - not THE problem, but a part of it. Any cyclist serious about their racing will know when/how/what or make an effort to find out.

There were more positive comments yesterday than negatives ones which means the cyclists that do participate are at least trying to be a part of the success of the event.

edit: completed my sentence.

edit 2: I forgot about the higher than previous year costs, but there are other threads that debate the cost of bike vs entry fees vs helmets, etc.

Hi Gerald,

I agree that it was a lot better organised than last year, but it still can be improved a lot! I am one of those riders who stayed away, but hopefully next year the organizers can build on the successes from this year, in which case I will attend!

If a look at how successful the Carnival City race is every year (which I believe you organise), it shows it can be done, with 100's of riders in each racing category.

One of the other big contributing factors comes down to the fact that one doesn't have to participate in provincials in order to race at SA's. In my opinion, this is something which if addressed, would immediately increase the numbers of riders at provincial champs.
