Whats the most cost effective 11 Speed setup for MTB?

What's the best gear ratio to go for. I need to not run out of gears on flats & slight downhill and need an easy gear fro steep climbs.

Been suggest to go with 11-42 and front ring 30, 32 or 34.

Any suggestions please on what to buy, where, what gear ratio etc. Thanks.

I have a 32 up front currently but looking to upgrade to a 36 up front because i don't have massive hills where I live.  If you have hilly terrain, i'd suggest a 34 depending on how strong a rider you are.

I bought a SLX groupset from CWC and loving it!

The choice of gearing is quite dependent on your riding style, wheel size and typical riding terrain. You haven't given us any of this info and any reply given without taking these factors into account is speculative at best.

So are you a pedal masher or a spinner?

26, 27.5 or 29er?

Dirt roadie, XC whippet, technical trail junkie, off-track explorer? How many km/week on average? Where do you mostly ride?

Thanks,

Do you have some more info on that groupset. Do any of these work with grip shift? Thanks.

SLX does not work with gripshift - different pull ratio.

I would say best value is Shimano 46/11 SLX - but limited to underbar shifters - 32 or 34 chainring will give you enough range for most things - 32 if you are riding epic - 34 if you are in Gauteng - 36 if you are a top rider and like to grind.

My 1x12 setup using a 50/10 and 34 on the front is geared almost identically to a 24/28 and 36/11 cassette 10 speed - If I was racing only in gauteng I would have put on a 36 in the front.

SRAM NX shifter and derailer combo. (buy them from Evobikes)

Rapide 11-42 (or 11-46) Cassette and chain combo with 32 front chainring (buy them from Kiwi/Rapide)

It will be the most cost effective option you can get.

I am currently running this combo, without a problem at all.

I ride a 29er and i am fat. So i normally run a 30T upfront but currently have a 32T upfront to try and get the legs a bit stronger over the holidays (not that i have been on my bike in december)

I'll put the 30T back in the new year when i go ride steeper hills again.

I run 11-42 at the back and i can comfortably spin on a flat to 30-35km/h without looking like a hamster. Downhills are for resting!

I upgraded from a 3x10 to 1x11 in August and paid R2700 for an XT upgrade kit from CRC. As soon as this cassette is done i will get the 11-46 or if rapide will make another expander cassette for 11speed i wil go that route so that i can put a 32/34 upfront. I kept my old XT crank and only bought a couple of cheap N/W chainrings from rapide (30T) and from china (30/32/34). The rings are *** cheap from china.

Value for money must be Shimano but shifting with SRAM is superior.

11-42 or 11-46 cassette with 32 or 34 ring, depending on how strong you are

I've been riding SRAM GX for over a year on my camber and it has been FAULTLESS.

This is despite me being notoriously hard on bikes and lax on maintenance.

It works in ALL conditions - from a gauteng mudfest to sani2C to the namib desert to the Spruit.

As mentioned Above your wheel size is very important.

a 650b needs much less torque to get going than a 29er so a 34 might give the same feel as a 32t would on a 29er.

but 32t on a 29 and you won't lose much top end , if any at all

Same with a 34 on a 650b , but only use that as a guide line.

For moderate hills (lets say thats the avarage)

26' 36t

27.5' 34t

29' 32t

Adjust accordingly based upon how strong you are / the absence or presence of big hills.

Thanks for starting this topic. I have been reviewing this for the past month and the best I can find is:

https://www.bike-discount.de/de/kaufen/shimano-xt-1x11-fach-upgrade-kit-mit-11-42-512434

Most tests and reviews rate the new XT 8000 above most SRAM at a similar price.

I was initially looking at the 11-46 cassette until I saw one on a bike. It is absolutely massive. But my main concern is the price of cassettes. 11-42 is still okay, but once one moves towards 46 and especially 50, the price of casetttes starts to get silly
