Funny Duane; I looked at this thread and a strange force made me search the Hub for Morzine. Lo and behold your name was there.  It is on my bucket list; the Alps that is not the Epic.

Go!! Please go. It's is incredible. 7th trip in a row this year. I can't not go. I suppose it's the same for the okes who HAVE to do the Epic each year.

Time to man up and do TRANS Siberia..... ;)

The daughter of my Epic partner was mocking us. We were not doing a real 'Epic' but just a 'baby-Epic' because there were people carrying our stuff from A to B and making us food. It would be a REAL Epic if we were to carry our stuff ourselves. I had to giggle a bit since this was how I grew up riding my bike...none of this papered racing nonsense but lugging my **** from A to B... in the late 90's two study mates of mine rode the Panamericana (some 20,000+km) unsupported spread over three summer breaks. Average 150km/day, then put up tent, cook food, take pictures and shoot video. 40-50days in a row. Crossing the Rockys and Andes how many times... Makes me smile thinking about out little Epic adventure/race, whatever ...we are just having some fun here :)

It's kind of what I have against the epic... You could do a trans Patagonia ocean to ocean for the same price... I'd much rather do that

So for my first post of 2017 I'll put on the hat of an Epic defender  :whistling: Not planning to do this race ever but I think it is a case of sour grapes knocking a successful world class local event.

When I enter a stage race, I want to race it.

If I'm looking for an adventure, I'd plan my own trip and don't go the fully pampered event route.

Seems this is the point the adventure punters are missing

Yes you can do a lot of other adventures for far cheaper than the Epic, but the Epic is a unique "premium stage race" experience with it's own virtues. All the best single track bits in this race (and the W2W for that matter) is open to the public to go and ride on your own time, yet these events sell out because they offer something more than just riding singletrack.

On the route, I also joked about a longer W2W in reverse but for me this is actually an improvement on last year, something different to the last 2 years. Think the problem is there is just so many iterations of the route you can do around Cape Town (if you want to use established single track trails). Don't know how they are going to come up with something unique every year as just about everything available around CT has been done a few times.

They could do the race around Knysna, George and the areas in between. That could include the Harkerville trails, Homtini, and many others.

But then the high-class European team support and other media teams don't get to stay in posh Cape Town hotels and guest houses, and some of the prestigious wine farms don't get advertising and media exposure. Shame.

Don't think a lack of posh hotels are a problem in the Knysna area. Think part of the problem is that there aren't enough trails to host an 8 day event unless they run into Cape Pioneer Trek territory. Maybe if they split the race between Knysna (or somewhere else) and the winelands (if that is at all practical)
