I use the kmc sl chains on my roadbike with a ultegra cluster and the .93 on my mtb with a slx cluster. The shifting is much better in both cases. I also found the kmc chain is much more quiet on a worn chainring than the shimano XT chain.

KMC is the largest bicycle chain manufacturer in the world - they know a thing or two about how to make a bicycle chain ... most of the high volume SHIMANO models are produced under licence by KMC

as someone pointed out you need to be careful of making a blanket statement about KMC - they have a HUGE range of chains ( more than any other chain manufacturer on the planet! ) and offer their MTB and ROAD models in various levels

.93 is the entry

L - Light - inner link is hollow

EL - Extra-Light has both inner and outer links with hollow plates

SL - this is above EL and has hollow pins as well

every single bike manufacturer in the world turns to KMC for their chains ... it is just a question of which level they buy and spec.

Aftermarket is usually the .93 which is cheaper than "name brands" with the same or better quality ... or SL which is lighter than the best of the S brands!

Maybe its bad luck but I have had 5 KMC chains in my life time and all of them have snapped before 500km was put on them

I am by no means A power house I weigh 61kg and my highest ever 5sec power was 1240w

So its not me and NO I don't cross chain nor do I shift under power

Shimano SLX chains have served me well and I will not change soon.

Seriously bad luck/batch or user error in some form. Snapping 5 chains from a single manufacturer(especially with that rider weight) is highly unusual if there is zero user error but I'm putting my money on user error!!

There was some guy that was cleaning his chains with something mildly corrosive that weakened his chains and resulted in snaps, maybe it was something in the that vein.

Never heard of KMC chains being rubbish, actually quite the opposite, very reputable and high quality.

I have a question for those in the know.. Can I put a 10spd XT mtb chain on my roadbike with 10spd Ultegra groupset?  I'm due for a new chain and have a new xt chain lying around , found mixed reports on the interweb as to weather or not it will work.. Thought I'd ask before breaking the new chain..

Wow thanks for this info. I didn't know that they where that big. Glad to know that I ride a really decent chain.

So I looked back in my log on Strava - my bike came with a KMC X10 which did only 1000km. Strangely, the link next to the quick link kept breaking, so eventually I had 4 consecutive quick links!

My current Shimano Deore chain is being retired at 2,700km with 0.75% chain wear.

This, and the CWC special on XT chain for 399 made my decision easy. I'm also going to install with the supplied pin rather than quick link, as I assume that it will be marginally stronger or less susceptible to breaking that way...

Oh the irony! After all the above, snapped my brand new XT chain on ride 1! However it snapped on the pin that you press in when you fit the chain, so I assume I didn't get it quite right. So the quick link is now in, will see how it goes...

Bought 4 XT chains from CRC at a good price last year, to replace my current XT chains when they're eventually worn. If you can get a good deal on a reputable brand, I think you're OK, chains are pretty tough suckers, no matter the brand/model :)

I am going to go the Connex route when I replace my chain/s. last a lot longer and they run smoother than most.

I had a Connex chain many years ago (9 speed) and I got double the mileage out of it than I ever got from a top end Shimano chain.

I use quick release links on all my chains even shimano, Kiwi/Rapide sells them for R25k each, they also have about the best prices on chains as well.

Quick links are too convenient and bulletproof not to use, never had one fail and with some quick link pliers your chain is off in under a second and back on just as fast.

How much are the cheapest 10spd connex chains?

They really make the best chains but not economical to use them if the price is too crazy.

The Connex links are also bullet proof, a bit more pricey but considering they don't need tools to undo and they can be reused over and over - works out ok...

Pricing is similar to Shimano equivilents, the distributors (Bicycle Power Trading) went to great lengths to make sure the pricing was competitive to similar chains on the market - barring specials like CWC have had...
