HECTIC start to the race:

After 41km, Enric Mas and Matteo Trentin (Quick Step), Damiano Caruso (BMC), Antonio Pedrero, Jose Joaquín Rojas and Marc Soler (Movistar Team), Lennard Kämna (Team Sunweb), Pawel Poljanski (Bora-Hansgrohe), Clément Chevrier and Axel Domont (AG2R-La Mondiale), Tom Scully, Toms Skujins and Davide Villella (Cannondale-Drapac), Maxim Belkov and Marco Haller (Katusha-Alpecin), George Bennett (LottoNL-Jumbo), Sergei Chernetski (Astana), Tomasz Marczynski (Lotto Soudal), Giovanni Visconti (Bahrain-Merida), Lachlan Morton (Dimension Data), Guillaume Bonnafond and Dani Navarro (Cofidis), David Arroyo (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) and Ricardo Vilela (Manzana-Postobon) are 1'20" ahead of a 11 man chasing group. The peloton is at 1'40" and other riders are still trying to jump ahead.

Alexey Lutsenko and Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana) and Guillaume Bonnafond (Cofidis) have joined the front of the race after 53km of hard racing.

If he was to go on and win the Giro in 2018, Would that make it a Triple? Or is the cycling community pedantic and require it to all be in the same cycling calendar year?

 

 

I think the only way he will ever go to the Giro is if he has already won the Vuelta. Because no matter how many TDF's he has to his name, there is an even more elite club of riders who has won all three GT's and Nibali is in that club while CF ain't. Highly doubt it would be 2018 though. Personally i would enjoy seeing in at my favourite GT of the year, the Giro.
