Hi All

In Aug 2016 I started MTB'ing...And Im loving it.

In my teens I owned a road bike and loved it.

My current riding mates own both. They are constantly nagging me to get a road bike as well. I don't want to.

So here is my question.

What am I missing out on that I can't get from my current bike?

All opinions for and against either will be respected but PLS post a reply that will add to the sport of cycling.

Happy kms...not dust. no story.

D

Road bike is faster. lighter and less maintenance. Longer distances faster and less energy.

I can keep up with my group with my MTB. My MTB only did ofroad once, but it gives you a great workout on tar.

just put some slicks on your MTB and get your mates to go for a ride with their roadies and you on your MTB and have a look at how well you do. If they drop you..... you know what to do.

If not. You saved some money. My road bike is in the market now for this reason.

If You can afford it get both.

If you can't, make a plan and get both. Technically speaking you don't need both your kidneys :whistling:

TBH I love my roadbike more than the MTB, but being able to ride where there aren't any cars is a major +.

Ultimately it depends on whether you can afford it

MTB- more adventure orientated and closer to nature. More socially orientated, its easier to chat on a mtb than on road. More versatile i.e you can put on some slicks and ride the tar but not as fast. More expensive to maintain.

ROAD- Exhilarating speed. Cheaper to operate (unless theres lots of glass in the road where you live) My only gripe with the road scene is having to share the road with cars. Its dangerous and you have to be vigilant constantly.

These are my opinions and may differ from anyone elses.

It is such a personal thing that. I rode road bike provincially while at school and loved, only did a bit of mtb. Started doing some enduro and downhill in Matric and got hooked on it.

Got an XC bike to get fit as I just loved being in the bush and on the mountain. Before I knew it my road bike became an ornamant because everytime I had time to ride I chose my XC or Trail bike.

So yeah, if you have friends that spend time on the road bike and will get you onto the bike then get one, it certainly is a great way to get and keep fit, but it is an expensive purchase to make if you are not gonna use it!

Personaly, my dream list of bikes has about 5 bikes on it, none of them being a road bike! But that's just me...

I own both and love them for different reasons. Been a roadie since 2009, MTB'ing properly since last year when I got my RockyMountain Vertex HT (rode MTB before that on borrowed bikes)

Road - faster, further, easier group rides, the world is your oyster in terms of where to ride

MTB - awesome scenery, safer in terms of cars - not so much in terms of broken bones / crashing, higher maintenance, hard on the body (depending on where you ride), can get boring with riding the same trails over and over

Having done Argus, Die Burger Road and MTB, Trans Baviaans 2015, Tour of Good Hope 2016, Attakwas 2017 and a couple others in between - I find I take my road racing more seriously in terms of racing and 'chill' on the MTB.

Each bike has their pro's and con's. Too much MTB makes you slow on the Road - Karl Platt does a 60/40 ratio or Road vs MTB training. It all depends on what you want to do

The problem with being on the road is that it doesn't matter if its your fault or not... you lose.

Rather go down on your own terms... MTB for the WIN

Or harden up and train more...

I love both, but I find road to be more of a serious outing if you will. A lot of fun, but in a different way.

Training is done much easier on a road bike as well

There is just something about riding a road bike on the road vs riding an MTB, something about the 'right tool for the job'?

As much as I enjoy riding my MTB, that quiet continuous pedaling on a road bike, covering lots of distance in a short time has it's own allure!
