Going from 3x9 to 1x11?

I went from 3x9 to 1x11. Im happy with my gearing, but I am getting regular chain drop now, which I never had with the 3x9. Over corrugations the chain bounces off the top of the chainring slightly, and falls off. Ive had the chain made as short as possible, but at the top of the chainring the length should not maje a difference anyway. Setup is XT 11-42 casette with carbon ti 36T direct mount chainring in front (Hollowgram crank). Damn irritating I say :(

I'd hazard a guess that it's the chainring. Not all narrow/wide chainrings are designed equally. I had the same thing with a RaceFace narrow/wide

Senor Google is not always straight forward.

Plus it always seems like case and point these days.

There's hardly an absolute answer for anything.

To true as in SRAM 11spd road cassettes still use a normal Shimano style freehub body.

I also suspect that it might be the chainring - got it from CWC, it was not so easy to find stock of a 36t direct mount for Hollowgram.

I should try a Cannondale one, but Im worried about a repeat. The other alternative would be Wolf Tooth, but they do a spider and seperate ring now (Abs Black does not make a 36t )

Is your clutch on?

Some NW rings have better profiles for chain retention than others. Wolftooth has been excellent for me ..... not a single chain drop so far.

Yes, riding with clutch on. Ive tried without the clutch on (forgot to re-engage it after putting the chain back on) but it drop even more frequently then.

Is your chain the right length? Chains need to be shortened by a couple of links when put on the bike.

I was ridding with a guy once who fitted a new chain the day before.... we had to take 6 links out while we were on the trail.

Yes. Any shorter and it wont be able to go onto the 42.

Doesn't matter who manufactured it, it was all one standard. 8/9/10/11 all interchangeable....

Not true had two sets of wheels that had 10 speed Shimano / Sram cassettes and and neither could take a SLX 11 speed cassette. One was a Giant wheelset (DT Swiss hubs) and the other my American Classic wide lightning Race wheels.

If you look at Evobikes site, they specifically selling an 11 speed freebody for American Classic wheels (which I bought in last week)

8 9 and 10 speed were all the same yes

VERY strange, though it's not the first time I'm not completely correct.

Thanks for that info, 'goose.
