What is the PPA doing?

I attended the last AGM and the mtb bias is something that came up. That perception is not entirely without merit but I think the truth is far more complicated. In fact on the AGM most of the new Exco members that were voted in were openly pro "road cycling".

including a lady (professional by trade) who is very pro commuting and urban development to promote non-motorised transport.

Excuse the quality. Of the R3 million for projects, just more than half went to "Safe Cycling".

And less than half the previous years safe cycling budget.... that's not good.

Correct, kudos to them for that.

BUT......

Nothing is being done to make this law known to the biggest culprits, the MOTORISTS....

A sign like I posted a page or two back, erected with intervals on the major training routes, will be a good start, though.

you can't just put up road signs on public roads..government needs buy in to approve the signs, confirm to a certain standard, etc.

advertising though is a viable option, but then you are looking at high costs and more than likely not ideally placed signs.

I get what you are suggesting RE signs though.

PPA seems so UN-appreciative of the Cape Town Cycle tour (road and MTB) - I maybe wrong - but on the PPA web site I don't even see this event listed on their calendar! 99er falls under all events and other. They use this event to try and get more member - we all know how - yet the don't list it. I hope its just my eyes that have failed me and its on the PPA web page somewhere.

if you are looking for the CTCT, why not just look at the CTCT dedicated web site ..... http://www.capetowncycletour.com/

it is not like the CTCT is an unknown event.

I'm a PPA member and have been ever since my first Argus. These days I do about 7 or 8 events a year, of which 2 or 3 or PPA affiliated (Argus, Double Century).

I don't mind paying my subs as the money goes back into cycling regardless of the discipline. Whether it's MTB ,road or safety campaigns, I reckon the more people we have on bikes the better it is for all of us in the long run. General awareness of cyclists can only be a benefit to us all.

So let me put this out there.

To all people moaning about the PPA being so terrible .....

  • are you a paying member?
  • if yes, are you contributing positive criticism, or just plain inflammatory and caustic comments intended to deface the current PPA ship?
  • if no, are you engaging on another level to assist in road safety, or other facets of cycling that benefits the greater cycling community?
  • have you taken up your displeasure directly with those steering the PPA (in a constructive manner)
  • not everything can be how you as an individual would like to see the PPA operating

I have the same philosophy

All organisations have their gold and their warts.

Hope they can be agile though and still update / refresh / improve / enhance their response to the killing of cyclists on South African roads.

Good point

Makes this thread more relevant

I have heard through the grapevine that the 2017 budget is rather large for safe cycling and cycling development ... will see if I can get a better rough figure that is clearer than "rather large"

the behaviour on our roads, and in fact the whole criminal element in the country too, is a social issue.

the only way to truly do something about  this is through the children being taught at an early age to respect the laws, and fellow beings (being's being chosen, as all living forms need to be included in this).....crime also comes with additional elements, such as poor living conditions, trying not to let your family starve, "needing" to get your next drug fix.

I shared this on the How to stop the Cycling Carnage on SA's roads? thread:

My wife does the graphic design and layout for the monthly publication. As mentioned in the other thread, it is a trucking/fleet magazine, but they are asking the public to engage with them on how to reduce the carnage on our roads. Here's your chance to have your say outside of this forum - whether it helps or not, you're pretty much preaching to the converted on this forum... the message needs to get out, far and wide.

Copied from their FB page:

FleetWatch is once again in the process of compiling our annual 'Road Safety Report' due to be published in February. As before, we are asking all personnel from the trucking industry to submit suggestions as to how they think the mayhem on South Africa's roads can be reduced and we are asking you as a the road user for your suggestions and remarks!

Please take a moment to fill out these simple questions. You do not have to be in the trucking indutry to contribute!

Please pardon my ignorance... the PPA is only over the WC? Or are they country-wide?

What exactly is the PPA's mandate?

If only, WC why be concerned over cycling safety outside of WC in any case (ie fatal accidents)?

Sorry, just feels like that actually very little is done towards safe cycling initiatives outside of the Republic of Cape Town. Not that anything IS done in the CT....

This thread is not about "how terrible the PPA is", please lets not take it there.

This thread was about what they are doing. (Still hasn't been answered) and how we as a community can better engage with them.

Educating the youngsters is absolutely a way of addressing the issue. This method will have longest lasting benefits, however it is also the slowest one to take effect.

We need to implement short and medium term plans too.

Short term being suggestions like road signs, different campaigns (stay wider of the rider), motorist awareness etc.

Medium term, being cycle lanes etc

So as much as I agree that kids need to be taught, we cannot only do that, and wait 15 years for them to grow up and start driving in a cyclist friendly manner.
