Yogging...

So, I started jogging beginning of the year(thanks Strava 365...), and around two weeks ago I started getting really sore on the insides of my calves. I get the pain when I'm walking fast or jogging, and while it gets a little bit better about 5min into the run it's still there and still painful.

The soreness does not return while cycling.

I usually jog 20-25min at a pace of between 5 and 6 min per km. As I said earlier, I started beginning this year after not jogging more than 4km's for two years.

I run with Columbia Drainmaker shoes, which to my knowledge isn't designed for running(didn't buy thm as that anyway)

They are really comfy otherwise

Now, do you guys think the pain is from me starting to get fit, or is it a problem with the shoes perhaps?

Could be shin splints depending on where the calf-insides are. This is normal for beginners, especially if you out in more weekly km's than what you are used to. Roll those calves out. Do some calf rises and light stretching as well.

Also, big chance that the shoes have a influence but not necessarily the culprit. It's not a bad idea to get a dedicated pair of running shoes anyway.

Im no expert but according to some fellow runners it could be a number of things.

Shoes I would say is very important as running in the wrong shoes could lead to serious injuries which could keep you off the bike for a few months.

The second thing I was told when I started running is not to go too fast too soon as this could also lead to serious injuries further down the line.

As cyclists we have an already established cardiovascular system so it is possible to run for long periods with out feeling fatigued but what needs to be remembered is that running is an impact sport and our muscles and joints are not use to the impact of 'hitting' the road and thus many cyclists who try to run too fast end up getting injured.

Like I said, Im no expert so if Im wrong then someone please correct me.

It appears that my soleus is hurting... Don't know if that changes anything...

Say I started out too quickly, and that my muscles simply can't adapt that fast: Surely 20 min of jogging can't be too much? But, am I perhaps running at a pace that's too quick? If so, what would a good pace to start be?

Happened to me. Same spot. You are cardio fit from cycling, but legs are not used to impact.

Take pace down to 6:30 and get a good base, i.e. for 2 weeks. Then increase at 10% distance per week there after, also slowly increasing pace.

You should be able to speak a long sentence normally without gasping, if not then you are running to fast.

Running is a baastid thing if you have the wrong shoes. Those shoes with bits missing...... will only work for genetically very lucky runners, suggest you get a gait assessment and shoe recommendation from an experienced running shop.

I had Asics a few years back, and would love to get some of them again...

Best shoes ever!

But interesting about the shoes, I used to trail run with Nike and Puma, and both were quite comfortable albeit the Puma's put a bit of pressure on my left foot's toes. But the Puma, Asics and Nike were all designed for running, and I think that makes a big difference

Getting a proper assessment is a good idea. After having some issues I went this route and was recommended to use asics nimbus and have used the last 12 years. Poobies Naidoos in PMB has really great asics prices and they have an online shop

These two.

Happens to "youngsters" who feel too young to run slow and fit cyclists who feel fit ... but NOT RUNNING FIT.

Haven't run for almost 2 years. Went on Monday for an hour in Newlands forest. Tuesday and wednesday all my ankle stabilising muscles were sore. Today all is fine.. just give the sore muscles some decent recovery time as well. Been cycling past days.

I always get mind numbing pain in my ankles and knees whenever running, No matter how much or how little running I do. Recovery periods , foam rolling , different shoes nothing has worked for me and I have basically given up on the idea to run.

If anyone on here thinks there is something i have not yet tried please suggest down below \/ \/

Take my advice, take a few days off until the pain is completely gone. And start doing calve raises to strengthen those muscles. If you continue running it will develop into full blown shin splints even a stress fracture. Trust me, Im out for more than 2 months now.
